Welcome to Fifth Grade!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The year is off to a great start!  Every child in our new fifth grade class did a wonderful job on the first day back to school.  This year will be full of exciting new things for your child to learn and experience.  I am looking forward to working with your child in our classroom learning community.

Since I will be a new partner with you in your child’s education, it would be very helpful if you could complete the “My Child as a Learner” questionnaire and return it to me by Friday, September 8th.  Please feel free to add anything else about your child that you think I should be aware of.  This will enable me to provide the specific types of learning opportunities that are BEST for YOUR child.

Today, we worked on our classroom expectations.  My approach to teaching is to create an academically challenging environment where every student feels safe and welcome.  Every student is a unique individual and will be expected to do his or her best at all times.  It is my goal to facilitate that success so that every child feels that they have achieved their very best.

Lifelong skills are emphasized as guidelines for getting along with others and producing quality work.  Specific “Lifelong Guidelines” and “Life skills” are included in our Classroom Procedures Book.  These skills will be encouraged throughout the year.  Children will be recognized for their positive contributions to our class and their own learning.  Consequences will be applied for those who choose not to follow our classroom expectations.

Since we have lunch at 12:30, your child may bring a healthy snack to eat after morning recess while we read our literature selection.  Your child’s homework assignments are written on the day they are due in their planner.  Homework can also be found on our class website: http://schools.lwsd.org/wilder/meyers/. Homework is given to practice and refine new concepts.  Please let your child try to do as much of the homework independently as possible.  I look forward to seeing all of you at Curriculum Night on September 14th.  At that time the 5th Grade Team will discuss curriculum, homework expectations, and classroom volunteer opportunities in more detail.

Please don’t hesitate to call me at school or e-mail me at kmeyers@lwsd.org with any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions you may have about your child’s education.  I look forward to a great year working with you and your child!

Sincerely,
