ABC (Art Beautification Committee) [Webpage]
Volunteers work with the principal on child-facilitated art projects to beautify and leave a lasting memory at Thoreau.

After School Programs (Art, Homework Club & Honor Choir)
Volunteers work with the teachers of these programs to handle registration and support them as needed. In honor choir, volunteers are occasionally needed for sound/light equipment, videotaping and driving a carpool to events.

Art Docent Program [Webpage]
This is a L.W.S.D structured art program where teachers will include a progressing art lesson once a month to their class. Volunteers are needed to lead a class in the art lesson during the school day once per month, or to assist with set up and clean up.

Audit
At least once a year a parent works with the Treasurer to go through a state checklist type audit of our books.

Bank Day
Program sponsored by WA Mutual Bank, helps children learn to manage money by setting up their own bank account. Volunteers needed to receive deposits from students once per week during the school day.

Bingo Night [Webpage]
One evening event with bingo, prizes and food. Volunteers needed to sell tickets, as well as procure and hand out prizes.

Book Adventure Program [Webpage]
This reading incentive program designed to enhance our reading program at Thoreau runs January to June. Volunteers work with the teacher team leader on this and facilitate the program.

Chess Club is a yearlong after school club. It generally runs once per week for an hour. Volunteers are needed for the coordinator position. The coordinator(s) help during club time and keep up to date on upcoming tournaments.

Emergency Preparedness [Webpage]
PTA enhances the district emergency plan with a resource notebook of the parents and by providing a comfort item and food in case of an unfortunate event where students would have an extended stay at school. Volunteers are needed at the beginning of the year to gather items and organize this.

Fall Dance [Webpage]
A dance DJ comes in the week before the dance and teaches the kids fun dances during PE. Then we all get together to boogie. This Fall it will be Friday, Nov. 4th. Volunteers are needed to think of a theme, be door monitors, and sell refreshments.

Free Money
Albertson’s Partner Cards, BoxTops, Cartridges for Kids, Foster Farms, Target Cards and Washington Mutual Cards all generate about $2,000 per year for PTA! Volunteers for this committee keep track of these programs and keep our families motivated to participate.

Golden Acorn Award
At the Volunteer Tea at the end of the year, a person or persons are selected to receive this award. It recognizes continued and dedicated volunteer support of children at our school and in our community. Past recipients usually help with the nomination information of this award.

Ice Cream Social & Information Night [Webpage]
One night event early in the school year (usually in the first part of September). In past years we have had ice cream, face painting, and balloon artistry, as well as booths with information about the cool programs Thoreau has to offer. Arrange for donations of supplies and vendors, set up and clean up on day of event, arrange for entertainment. Volunteers also help scoop ice cream.

To continue to improve math skills, 6th grade students can participate in the tutor program. During their recess they help primary students review math facts. This benefits both students. Ribbet Run [Webpage]
This is our one main fundraiser with much needed contributions last year totaling around $19,000.00. This is a fun run that has become a tradition at Thoreau! Students collect money for laps and earn prizes from their donations. Volunteers are needed: before the event to distribute information; on the day-of for lap counting, following the event for prize distribution and parties.

Room Parents
Ideally each classroom has a room parent to support the teacher and classroom. Each teacher utilizes this person differently. Mostly facilitating holiday class parties, helping with field trips and other support as needed.

Safe Arrival
Parents needed each day of the week to come to the school office at 8:45 am to call parents of children who are marked absent and have not alerted the school.

Safety Patrol [Webpage]
5th and 6th grade students participate in the safety patrol program. A parent of these students steps up to support the teacher facilitating this program. PTA budgets money for this. Volunteers buy candy after Halloween for treats for the students; Plan a mid-year pizza luncheon; and work with teacher to set up the end-of-year party.

Plan & arrange for photographer for individual (Fall) and class (Spring) photos. On day of events, volunteers direct children to/from class, help children look their best.

In case of an emergency closure at school, you would be contacted with information to pass on to your class. In the Fall the chairperson of this committee receives the information from the school secretary and organizes it and distributes it to the volunteers from each class.

Top Frog ACE Awards
Every month a student from each class is chosen by the teacher to receive this award. The student earns this from their Academic, Citizenship, and overall Efforts. A volunteer organizes the certificate, button or ribbon for the monthly recipients of this award and helps with the lunchtime celebrations.

Vision and Hearing
Volunteers are needed for one day to help with screening to test vision and hearing for students. No prior experience is necessary, as training will be provided. Chairperson works with the district on scheduling this, usually sometime at the end of January.
