May 27, 2005 May 27 No School-Professional Teacher Day 30 No School-Memorial Day June 9 Volunteer Thank You Tea 17 Frog Day 20 6th Grade Graduation 1:00pm 21 11:45am Dismissal – Last Day of School PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Spring Time Gardening For Daily Living Sunny Weather Ahead Finally
the sun has returned. I spent an afternoon with our 6th graders at
Camp Burton earlier this week. The kids were having a great time in this
beautiful setting on Vashon Island. The sunshine made it twice as nice. When
nicer weather arrives in the spring, it is always good to remind students
about our school dress code. It is important that students dress for school
and not for the beach. Half-shirts, halter tops, shirts with spaghetti straps
are not allowed. Shorts are okay, but must be at least finger tip length. Please
choose shoes with safety in mind. Sandals with heel straps are okay but flip
flops are not. PE and recess activities require appropriate shoes. Our
full dress code can be found in the 2004/2005 edition of the Thoreau Parent
and Student Handbook distributed last fall to families. Thank you for your
support of our school dress code. AFTER SCHOOL PICK UP PROBLEMS There has been a recent rise in the number of students waiting to be picked up at the end of the student day, well beyond 3:30. This places an extra workload on our office staff as they try to determine the delay, communicate with parents and supervise students. Please make prompt plans to pick up your child after school. Our office officially closes at 4:00. All students should be picked up by 3:30 p.m. If for some reason you are going to be late, please call. We understand that unavoidable events happen. We just don’t want to be providing after school supervision on a routine basis. KIRKLAND BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB VISIT On Tuesday, May 31,
representatives from the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club will be on campus, giving
out information to students after school regarding their programs for the
summer. I wanted to let parents know ahead of time so you know what is
happening. I’ve always been pleased with the quality of programs provided by
the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club and am happy to support this organization.
Their summer camp will be held at Thoreau this summer. BOOK ADVENTURE UPDATE We’ve got some great new
books and other prizes to give away for the readers in May. This month’s Book
Adventure prize give-away will be held on Tuesday, May 31, during lunch. All
forms should be submitted by Thursday, May 26, due to the long holiday
weekend. The on-line quizzes can be taken up through Friday, May 27. There
will be one more prize give-away in June so any quizzes or forms done after
that will be counted toward next month. Again, great job to all those
participating!!! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Karen
Ulbrickson or John Turnbull by calling the Thoreau office, 425 823-4350. MUD BASKET We are already looking at preparing our Mud Basket for next fall. We are finding that we need to keep too many pairs of jeans in different sizes to accommodate our students who need to borrow pants. Therefore, we would like to have only sweatpants, t-shirts, socks, and new undies stocked in our basket. Any contributions you could make of the above items are most appreciated! Thank you! |

Check out our
website for the latest information! CHESS INSTRUCTOR NEEDED We are looking
for an experienced chess player to teach our more advanced chess club
students for next year. We would like to have two classes, one for beginners
and one for experienced chess players. We have a "beginners"
teacher but need a more experienced teacher for the additional class.
Both clubs will be a maximum of 20 students and meet on Mondays after school
from 3:15 until 4:30 every week for about 6 months. Chess Mates pays $30 per
class for your services. Plus, the kids love chess and it is a lot of fun! If
you know someone that may be interested please call Regina Bock
at #814-6292 or Polly Blanchard at #820-8909 for more information. WAMOOLA PROGRAM Thank you for your support with the
Washington Mutual school program. We just received a check for $411.00 from
this program!! This money will be used for the Art Beautification Committee
projects. If you, family, or friends have a Washington Mutual Checking
account you can REGISTER your Washington Mutual bankcard and
designate Thoreau as your school.
They will donate $0.05 for every time you swipe! Go to www.wamoolafor-schools.com or call 1.866.wamoola. We have sold 62 tiles so far! It is sooo cool to see the
paper tiles go up across from the gym. The children are going to love seeing
their names on these tiles for years to come! The "early bird
special" of $45.00 for a 6x6 tile ends June 1st. After that it
will be $50.00. Please share this with
grandparents, employers, and other connections you may have that might be
interested. This is a 70% profit for us, and creates a lasting memory!
Questions, contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard 425
820-8909. CARNIVAL
KUDOS A big thank you to Stacy McJunkin for all her
expertise chairing the carnival. The gross was about $3,900.00 and it cost us
about $2,300.00, so the profit is about $1,600.00, which we will put in the
playground fund. We all had a super fun time! It takes about 80
volunteers to make this event happen, too numerous to list them all.... you
know who you are and should pat yourself on the back for taking time to
participate in such a fun event for families. Another big thank you goes to
Principal Roetcisoender and Karen Ulbrickson for their willingness to be
"dunked" and to Sally Freni, Geri Ward, Mrs. Guinan, Mrs.
Rosenberger, Sheryl Clark, Mrs. Damon, Mr. Elsworth, Mr. Snider, Mr. and Mrs.
Guthrie, Mr. and Mrs. Amundsen and Mrs. Ruby for helping in the prize
room...it was a frenzy and they handled it GREAT!! Also, thank you to
Brad Fisher and Dayne Lorenz the day and night custodians for accommodating,
helping, and their overall support of PTA events. And lastly, thank you
to Mr. Hayward for rearranging his PE schedule last minute so the slide could
be inside. Families were very appreciative of this!! It makes Thoreau a very
special place to have teachers and staff supporting our events and families
like this. By the way...Stacy McJunkin is not planning on
chairing the Carnival event next year. If you are interested in this,
please let a PTA board member know. We are very supportive! PLAYGROUND Thank you to all the families supporting our additional
playground adventure! We have about $4,500.00 in our playground fund so far. We
have applied for the $15,000.00 King County grant and will know in November
the results. We can do it if we all work together! Any comments, please
contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard at 425
820-8909. |
