Ready Start Preschool News

Hi;

One purpose of this web page is to give you ongoing information on child development. So far you have been linked to the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the District's Profile page for  preschool. This issue the Speech-Language Pathologist has explained her role in the classroom and provided a link to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. There you will find a wealth of information on language development.

In the future, there will be articles by The Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist among others.

Speech - Language Pathologist

The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides services within the preschool classroom.  Emphasis is placed on working within the child’s naturalized environment.  That being said, at times it is necessary to pull the child aside, either 1:1 or in a small group, to work on specific skills which may be later generalized to the classroom setting.  The SLP participates during skills groups one time per week, where an activity is chosen to work on specific skills such as turn taking, requesting, answering questions or vocabulary development.  In addition, the SLP works with children during snack, choice time and story and craft time.  The SLP also consults with other classroom staff and specialists to carry over skills throughout the school week.

By clicking here, you will find a link which provides a thumbnail sketch of typical speech and language development through the preschool years.  In addition, information is provided on how to augment a child’s communication at home and in the community.  The suggestions listed are appropriate for typical children, but may need to be modified for children with a speech/language delay or disorder.
