Committees & ProgramsFor the 2007-2008 School YearLast updated September 7, 2007Rose Hill Elementary and the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) work hand-in-hand providing fun, enriching activities for our students and families. Following are descriptions of activities and committees that traditionally appear on our calendars. Behind the scenes of each activity are one or more dedicated volunteers working to make the event a success. Each year, our committees change a bit depending on the level of volunteer interest in each activity. One or more additional opportunities may appear as the year progresses and volunteers develop new and creative ideas, while other activities may temporarily fall off the calendar until we are able to find adequate volunteer support. We hope you find the opportunity to serve our school and our children fun and inviting. If you would like some help identifying how you can best contribute, please don't hesitate to contact any member of the Executive Committee for more details. There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to fit everyone's needs and interests. You will discover that the personal connections you make with staff and parents while volunteering are valuable tools in helping your child succeed in school. 2007-2008 Committees & ProgramsExecutive Committee: The Executive Committee consists of the PTSA's elected officers.
After School Enrichment coordinates and organizes after-school programs such as foreign language, science, math and drama. Those involved in the Art Docent program teach simple art lessons about famous artists and styles while leading students in related art projects. Training is provided for all participants, so you don't need to be an artist to volunteer. Bake Sales are held in the gym and during various PTSA events throughout the year, such as Bingo Night. Volunteers are needed to donate baked goods and work one to two hour shifts during the Bake Sale. Bingo Nights are one of our most popular family events. Families gather to play bingo and win prizes donated by local merchants while enjoying hot pizza. Many volunteers are needed to organize and run this event, which is always a success. Everyone from the community is invited to join in the fun. Chaired by: Andrea Miller The Birthday Book Club manages a program of specially donated books to the Rose Hill Elementary Library. Every child receives an invitation on their birthday asking them if they would like to donate a book to the school library. In recognition of the donation, a commemorative bookplate with the child's name is placed in the front cover, and our librarian honors the child with a special presentation during one of their classroom visits. Chaired by: Marianne Schulz The Birthday Recognition program boosts self-esteem by recognizing every student on his or her birthday with a card and a special item. Johnna Perry The Book It program is run in affiliation with Pizza Hut. Program materials arrive in the fall. This program requires only one volunteer to distribute the materials to the teachers, and the teachers care of the rest. The program then needs to be ordered in the spring for the following year. The estimated time commitment for this program is less than one hour. Book Fairs are multi-day events normally held during conference weeks in the fall and spring. Many volunteers are needed to set-up, take down, and work 2-4 hour shifts during the fall Scholastic Book Fair. Chaired by: Jayne Tracy and Arlene Kettering. The Emergency Supplies & Safety Preparedness Committee monitors the supplies in the Emergency trailer on the playground and replenishes the supplies as needed. The Grant Writing Committee works on an as-needed basis to write grants for special funds or activities. Chaired by: Lisa Hubbell Hospitality requires volunteers to supply refreshments such as coffee, juice, and baked goods at all PTSA meetings and other events as requested. Chaired by: Kristin Sweetser Labels & Box Tops for Education is an ongoing program offered through Campbell's Soup and General Mills. It provides our school with the opportunity to earn free audio visual, athletic, and science equipment as well as cash. Chaired by: Jennifer Mason and Carol Ann O'Brien The Legislative Committee ensures parents stay better informed, better supported and better connected on all education-related issues affecting their families. There is abundant support and resources from Councils, Regions and the Washington State PTA who dutifully provide information, tools and resources needed to get the job done. No one is left trying to understand complex issues or crafting ways to engage parents. This volunteer opportunity is great for those who need or desire to complete their volunteer work away from school, as most, if not all, of the tasks can be completed on the computer and via email. Chaired by: Susan Mathews Library Assistance volunteers help in the Library during each class's library time. Volunteers check out books to the kids and re-shelve returned books. The time commitment is approximately a half-hour every week per class. Training is provided. Chaired by: Jayne tracy The Membership Committee coordinates the PTSA membership drive and maintains the membership database. Volunteers work closely with the Executive Committee to share membership information. Chaired by: Shelly Fanning Neighbor to Neighbor is a new committee this year. Its purpose is to act as a liaison between the PTSA and the Rose Hill Elementary staff to help identify and fill students' needs that are not otherwise met by school or social services. Chaired by: Andrea Miller The Raccoon Rally Annual Fundraiser is our PTSA's annual fundraising event held in October each year. Volunteers are needed to run this event that provides the majority of the funding for the entire school year's PTSA budget. The Raccoon Rally Annual Fundraiser includes every child in the school in a fun, non-competitive fitness event. Helpers are needed in the weeks prior to the event and during the event. Chaired by: Stephanie Moe-Quiggle, Jennifer Mason, and Lori Sherrell The Pawprints Newsletter is the monthly PTSA publication distributed to all Rose Hill Elementary families. Volunteers are needed for writing articles and copying and distributing the finished letters through Kid Mail and email. Chaired by: Susan Mathews The Popcorn Committee makes and sells popcorn once a week during the lunch hour and at various PTSA events by request. Chairpersons maintain the machine and supplies and coordinate helpers. Many volunteers are needed to work lunch hour shifts. Chaired by: Kristin Sweetser The Reflections Art Program takes place at the beginning of the school year. It follows the National PTSA Reflections guidelines to inform and assist students in the opportunity to create special works of art in literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts for school, state and nation-wide competition. Rose Hill Night at Safeco Field/Mariners is held one evening during the spring of each year. This event requires only one person to schedule and organize an all-school night at Safeco Field to watch a Mariner game. Chaired by: Stephanie Moe-Quiggle The Safety Committee implements the “Walk Your Child to School Week“ event in October of each year to bring awareness to school children and parents about safe walking, biking and driving routes. The event is organized by the City of Kirkland in conjunction with the national safety campaign. The city coordinates the special visitors (firefighters, police etc.) and provides all the prizes and handouts. Rose Hill Elementary volunteers staff tables each morning during the event to distribute forms and collect completed handouts, as well as to distribute prizes. Chaired by: Lori Sherrell The School Pride Committee organizes and coordinates the sale of school t-shirts and sweatshirts. One or two people send out order forms for the shirts, collect and place the orders, and deliver the shirts to the appropriate classrooms upon receipt. Chaired by: Beth Davis and Lori Singson The Science Fair is an annual event typically scheduled during the winter or early spring. Volunteers coordinate and plan an all-school event which is held over the course of one day, with kids exhibiting their experiments during the school day and then again during the evening at an event open to families and our community. Chaired by: Stephanie Moe-Quiggle Skate Nights are typically held three times a year. Two or three volunteers can run this event which includes scheduling and organizing Rose Hill Skate Night at Bellevue Skate King and selling tickets as students and families enter the event. Chaired by: Kim Martin The Special Needs Committee interfaces between the Regional PTSA Special Needs Chairperson and the parents of special needs children, providing informational resources as required. Chaired by: Janet Friedberg The Staff Appreciation Committee coordinates events to celebrate and recognize the dedication of our wonderful teaching and administrative staff at Rose Hill Elementary. The number of events is flexible, and they include Staff Appreciation Week in May. Chaired by: Beth Davis The Student Directory is a compilation of school, PTSA, and student information that is distributed to all school families.
