General Information

Q:  What do I do if my child is sick or will be absent?

A:  If your child will be absent or arriving late to school, please call the Safe Arrival Line (425-822-9580) and state your child’s name, teacher’s name, and reason for absence. The Safe Arrival Line is available weekdays between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m., and all day on holidays and weekends. This lets the school know your child is safe at home and the reason for their absence.

Q:  What if my child needs to take medication during school hours?

A:  The office frequently receives many questions regarding medication at school. If your child needs medication administered at school the following procedure shall apply. (Medication is defined as all prescription or over-the-counter drugs including cough drops). All medication to be administered must be accompanied by a Lake Washington School District Authorization to Administer Medications Form. This form must be completed by 1) a parent or legal guardian and 2) a physician or dentist. Medications and non-prescription medications must be in the original container and labeled with name of student, name of medication, dosage and time of administration and name of physician prescribing medications. All medications are administered between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Q:  What happens when children injure their head?

A:  Frequently students bump their heads during class and at recess. On all head injuries, no matter how big or small, it is the Lake Washington School District policy for office personnel to notify parents of this injury. If the office is unable to contact a parent a bright yellow wristband will be attached to your child. The child will be informed that only the parent can remove this wristband. Also, a head injury form will be sent home with all students that bump their heads.

Q:  What are the general guidelines on illness?

A:  Good attendance is encouraged for academic learning and for developing good habits for the future as a working adult. However, if your child is ill, allow him or her to remain home until the illness has run its course. A measure we use to determine illness is a temperature of 100 degrees or above. If this happens to a child at school, parents or guardians will be notified. Please be sure that your child is picked up as soon as possible.

Q: What is the school policy on emergencies, illness or injury?

A:  In the event of an emergency, illness or injury the school office will try to contact you from information listed on the yellow Emergency Information Card. Please be sure that your child ‘s emergency card is always up-to-date with your home and work phone number. Remember to include telephone numbers of nearby family or friends who can come for your child in an emergency. Students cannot be released to anyone unless they are listed on the emergency card.

Q:  What is the policy for dropping by the school to visit?

A:  Parents of Rose Hill students and other visitors are welcome and encouraged to visit and volunteer in our school. We do request that everyone first check in at the school office, sign in and receive an ID badge to be worn while on our campus.

Q: What is the tardy policy?

A:  Any student who arrives late will be sent to the office for an admit to class slip. Students with medical appointments are considered excused. Family emergencies will be excused only if parents notify the school office in the morning of the tardy by phone or send a note with your child. Students who are tardy for a reason other than those listed above will make up their missed work during noon recess in the Help Center.

Our goal is to have no students making up time during noon recess and 100% punctuality for every child.

Q:  What is the school dress code?

A:  The decision of what to wear and clothing styles should be made by parents and child. Please make certain that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. We have had a large number of students come into the office seeking dry clothing. Our stock of dry clothing is limited and precious instruction time is taken away from children when they call parents to request a change of clothing.

Clothing that causes distraction to learning or sets a negative example is inappropriate. Since students are required to go outside for recess and take part in PE and other activities, they must be suitably dressed.

The following will be allowed:

  1. Tank tops if a shirt is worn over or under it.
  2. Shorts and skirts the length of the top of the middle finger when the arm is extended.
  3. Hemmed or rolled up jean shorts.

The following are not allowed:

  1. Halter tops, bare midriff, tube tops
  2. Inappropriate sayings on clothing (example: beer/alcohol T-shirts).
  3. Holes in pants when hole is above the knee or large holes in shirts.
  4. Hats in school building except for designated hat day.
  5. Pants which sag.

Q:  How much does lunch cost?

A:  Individual lunches cost $1.75 and milk or juice for cold lunch is $.40. Parents may prepay for as many lunches/milk as they wish. With this system each student has a computer account. Please include the student’s name on checks sent to school. When a student does not have a lunch or lunch money, an emergency hot lunch will be provided. If a student comes with less than the full amount, the student will be given an emergency lunch and should bring the full amount the following day. Free and reduced lunches are available to qualifying students. Information and applications are sent home on the first day of school, or are available in the school office.

Q:  What happens if school closes early or starts late?

A:  In the event of fire, power failure, heavy snowfall or severe windstorm, parents are asked to stay tuned to their radio or television for information. When emergency conditions result in school schedule changes, the district will use one of the following plans:

No announcement means NORMAL SCHEDULE   Dismissal schedules will be at regular times unless otherwise announced on the radio between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Schools are CLOSED  All building activities are cancelled including school, before and after school activities, athletic events and parent meetings.

Late start and limited bus services  Elementary schools will start one and one-half hours late, (10:00 a.m.) and bus routes will be limited. When in effect, Quest and Morning Kindergarten classes are cancelled. High schools and junior highs will start one hour late.

Special Announcements  If there is a power failure or other conditions, a variation of the above plans will be announce.

The school office has the same information that is being reported by the TV and radio news stations. Our school phone lines are limited, and we need to keep them open to receive updated emergency information. For this reason we request you call the office only in emergency situations.
