Eight Lake Washington Schools Receive 2007 State Superintendent’s Learning Improvement Honorable Mention Awards

Schools receive recognition for meeting high standards in math and reading

Redmond, Wash. – Eight Lake Washington School District (LWSD) schools received honorable mentions in the 2007 State Superintendent’s Learning Improvement Awards. Those schools are: Audubon Elementary, Evergreen Junior High, Redmond Junior High and Rose Hill Junior High in Redmond; Finn Hill Junior High, Kamiakin Junior High and Kirkland Junior High in Kirkland; plus, McAuliffe Elementary in Sammamish.

These schools received honorable mentions for meeting high standards in both reading and mathematics on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). These schools also moved at least half of their students at least one level in math and reading over the past six years (when school’s baseline standards were determined). The WASL is scored on four performance levels: Below Basic (Level 1), Basic (Level 2), Proficient (Level 3) and Advanced (Level 4). Students must achieve Proficient (Level 3) to pass the WASL.

Each of these schools received notification about their award through a letter that was written and signed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Terry Bergeson and Governor Christine Gregoire.

In the letter, they write, “You are doing amazing things in your school. You’re helping to revolutionize the way schools help kids learn, and confirming the courageous conviction that all kids can learn. Everyone should recognize that you are changing students’ lives and, in doing so, literally changing the world.”

These eight schools join two schools that were named “Schools of Distinction” in October. Mann Elementary School and Alcott Elementary School were honored as two of 86 “Schools of Distinction” for dramatic improvements in student reading and mathematics over the past several years.
