FALL SPORT: CROSS COUNTRY

A Wonderful Opportunity for Your Son/Daughter

What is Cross Country?

Many people don’t even understand what Cross Country is. Cross Country is distance training and racing. A cross country race is typically 3.1 miles over a variety of terrain. Runners are grouped for training by their experience and fitness. We train on trails, in parks and on the roads and areas around the high school. Runners compete with other runners in small and large meets.

When is Cross Country?

The season runs from late August to early November. Practices are Mon.- Fri. from 2:45 to 4:45 and Saturday mornings 9-11. There are five Thursday meets and two Saturday invitationals throughout the season. The season concludes with the Kingco and District Championships in late October and the State Meet in early November

Who runs Cross Country?

I couldn’t think of a better circle of high school people to surround your son/daughter with. A cross country team has motivated, intelligent, hard working members. Everyone on our team is treated equally, male or female, freshman or senior. Runners on our team are young men and women, freshmen to senior, experienced, to never having run before, fast to slow, all from different backgrounds. We all come together into one big family. Last year, we had 35 boys and 35 girls on our team.

Why run Cross Country?

Cross country is a good place to learn something about oneself. We try to prepare our athletes to be healthy, happy, and wise. Colleges look favorably on students who have participated in cross country because it demonstrates self-discipline and dedication. We stress consistent training, improvement, and proper pacing. All are able to achieve success. We work hard, have lots of fun, share many rewarding experiences, and are sad when the season ends.

How does one turn out for Cross Country?

There will be a table at lunch time in early June where students will fill out an information sheet and receive training information. After the 4th of July there are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (optional) evening runs as a team (meeting at the school) to get in shape for the season. In August there will be a running retreat at Sun Lakes State Park and the season begins on August 20th.

Things to remember about cross country!

  • It is a coed sport

  • No previous experience is necessary to turn out

  • No one is ever cut from the team

  • Everyone gets to “play”, no one has to sit

  • We have fun with pasta parties, slurpee runs, etc…

  • Good fitness for another sport or for your health

  • Most earn a Varsity letter

  • Travel, friendships, learn skills and values for the future

  • Be a part of a winning team with a good tradition

Our Boys team won the District Championships last year and placed Ninth at State.

Our Girls team won the Kingco League Championship, won the District Championship and placed 5th at State. Additionally, the Girls have been League Champs four of the past five years and qualified for State eight of the last nine years.
