Slaves were kept under control in many ways. Depending on the owner's
mood, and attitude, a slave could be whipped, muzzled, or starved. Slaves
were forced to work day and night, with little food. That alone kept many
slaves under the owner's rule.
Whips were often used by slave owners and overseers, people who looked
after the slaves working on the fields. The slaves were often chained or
tied to a post, whipped, then left under the sun for a while.
Slave muzzles were used by owners with little heart. The muzzles was
used when a slave ate to much, or if he or she wasn't obedient. The
muzzles kept the slaves from eating, and kept the slaves from talking to
much. Slaves were sent to church for preachers to teach them how it was
natural for them to serve their owner's. This gave the owner's time to go
to church, and for the owner's to keep the slaves under control. Slave
codes also kept slaves under control, the law making it impossible for a
slave to do anything to a white person. For more of the slave codes, go to
the Slave Control page. Slaves were kept under control in a number of
ways. Some of the ways are here. But if you need more information, go to
