Are you aware that the Underground Railroad was not a railroad at all but rather a system of transporting African American slaves to non-slave territories.  This system was sometimes spontaneous highly organized.

Most fugitive slaves who were helped north into were young adult males who were skilled laborers without a family and so could be effectively concealed. They had to walk in the cold, rainy, windy, and hot weather to get to freedom.  But not everyone made it some got caught.

The Underground Railroad is every route the enslaved took, or attempted to take, to freedom.  It is a vast network of paths and roads, through swamps and over mountains, along and across rivers and even by sea.

Harriet Tubman was one of the famous leaders of the Underground Railroad. She was formerly a slave in the American south.  After escaping from slavery in Maryland she returned to the south 19 times, using various routes and disguises.  She was born on 1820 and died on 1913. She was born in Dorchester Co., Md.  Levi Coffin was also a very famous leader. he was often referred to as the president of the Underground Railroad.
