Prelab:

Before everyone come to the computer lab, they must have a copy of all pedigree symbols and a rough draft of the pedigree they are going to make in PowerPoint.

P.S.

(1) It will be better to list out the number of each symbol. (how many male, female, heterozygous, fraternal twin, etc). Once you know how to make the symbols, try to make all the symbols you need when start doing pedigree in PowerPoint.

(2) Read through pedigree rules to avoid making mistakes.

Starting PowerPoint:

Find PowerPoint in Microsoft Office shortcut bar and click once. Or go to <Start> à <Program> à <PowerPoint> and click once.

Working with Word in PowerPoint:

  1. After enter PowerPoint in process, the office assistant may come out with three options, choose the third one "Start Use PowerPoint". If the assistant come out with "Tips for the day", after read it, left click "Close".
  2. You will see a PowerPoint menu in the middle with four options on it. Left click "Template" then left click "OK".
  3. It will come out with "New Presentation" menu. Left click the "Presentation Designs" folder, then you may see a list of different slide. Choose your favorite one. (Be careful, the slide design you chose must be used through the whole presentation and preview of slide distorts color and shape). Then click ok.
  4. Next, a "New Slide" menu comes out. You must choose the one that matches your idea or things you are going to put inside the slide. (There is a little box on the right side to explain the format of each slide) For instance, you will choose "Title" slide to make your title. For making pedigree, the best suggestion is use the "Object" slide. (It can combine another program into PowerPoint, like Word and Excel)
  5. Left click on the "Object" slide, and then you may start editing the title of your presentation. Also, you may see a huge blank rectangle says, "Double Click to Add Object". Left click it twice. The "Insert Object" menu will come out, scrolls down until you see Microsoft Word Document, click it once and click "OK". Now, you are using Word system in PowerPoint.
  6. Make sure the "Drawing" toolbar is on your screen. If it doesn’t, go up to "View", drag down to "Toolbars" and left click "Drawing".

 

Drawing Pedigree in PowerPoint:

Drawing Lines – Left click on the symbol in the drawing toolbar. Then move the mouse and click to where you want to draw the line. Left click drag, to extend the length of the line. Release to stop drawing the line.

Editing Lines – Left click on the line, There will be two little squares on both end of a line. You can extend or shorten a line by dragging one of the little squares. Left click "Dash Style" in the drawing toolbar to make the lines dotted. Use "Line Style" in the drawing toolbar to change the thickness of a line or "Line Color" to choose the color of a line.

Draw one rectangle and one circle – Left click once on the "Rectangle" or "Oval" buttons in drawing toolbar. Go to the place you want the shape then click once. To move a shape, click inside the shape and drag, release mouse button where you want the shape to stay. (You may change shape size by using the steps above for editing lines. Once you have the rectangle and circle you want, copy all others from these templates.)

Copy, Cut and Paste – Left click on the textbox, shape or highlight the words you want to cut or copy. Then right click once, you’ll see the option of cut, copy, paste, add text, format AutoShapes, etc. Choose the on e you need and left click once.

Formatting AutoShapes and Textbox – Left click on the autoshape or textbox, then right click and drag down to "Format Autoshape". A menu will appear. Under the "Color and Lines" folder, you may choose a color to fill in the shape or the color, thickness and the style of the lines around the shape.

Add Text into Shapes – Left click on the shape you want to add text in, right click and drag down to "Add Text" then left click once to be able to add words and punctuation.

Filling Shapes – Click on the shape once, then click "Color Fill" button in the drawing toolbar. Left click again to choose the color you want to fill.

Draw a Half Rectangle – Left click on "AutoShapes" in the drawing toolbar, drag up to "Basic Shapes" and choose the symbol "Right Triangle" and left click. Left click on the place you want to put the shape. Then adjust the shape into the size you expect. After that, right click and drag up to "copy"(left click). Right click again and drag to "Paste" (left click). Now you have to congruent right triangles, choose one and left click on it. Move down to "Draw" in the drawing toolbar (left click) and drag up to "Rotate or Flip", move down to "Flip Horizontal"(left click) (the will become ). Left click on that triangle again, fellow the steps we use to flip the triangle, but this time choose "Flip Vertical" (the will become ). Finally fill in color for one of the triangle and combine two triangles into a male heterozygous symbol.

Draw a Half Circle (Arc) – Left click on "AutoShapes" in the drawing toolbar, drag up to "Basic Shapes" and choose the symbol "Arc" and left click. Left click on the place you want to put the arc. Left click on one of the tiny yellow square at both end of the quarter arc. Drag it and move clockwise until it become a half circle arc. After that, click on "Free Rotate" button in the drawing toolbar. The tiny squares become 4 tiny green dots. Left click and hold it to move 45o left ( ). Then copy the arc and paste it. After that, left click the new arc and use <Draw> in drawing toolbar à <Rotate or Flip> à <Flip Horizontal> (the 1st time) <Flip Vertical> (the 2nd time) (the will become ). Finally fill in color for one of the arc and combine two arcs into a female heterozygous symbol.

Draw a pair of Bracket – Left click on <AutoShapes> button in the drawing toolbar à <Basic Shape> à Left click on symbol <Double Bracket> once. Then left click on the spot you prefer to put the brackets.
