The Civil War, in US history, was a conflict that pitted the Northern states of the American Union against the Southern states. The war raged on for 4 years (1861-1865) and was marked by some of the fiercest military campaigns of modern history. Finally the war was ended in a small court house in Appotamax on April 9, 1865, where General Robert E. Lee surrendured to Ulysses S. Grant.
