Homer was a ancient Greek blind poet who is credited with writing the Iliad and The Odyssey. Scholars know very little about Homer. Some people think he lived in a Greek speaking city on the eastern shore of the Aegean Sea or on the island of Smyrna. Some people think Homer never lived and is just a legend.

If Homer lived he would have lived around 700 BC, in the Archaic period in Greece. Around the time Homer was born the Greeks has just recently learned how to use the alphabet from the Phoenicians. It is said that Homer probably did not come up with the writings The Iliad and The Odyssey but that they were already around and people had been telling them for hundreds of years and that Homer just put them on paper and edited them to what they are now. There are many different theories on if the tales from the Odyssey and The Iliad actually  came from Homer or a group of writers or story tellers but Homer is accepted as the creator.
