EDUCATIONAL PLANNING

Placement
Counselors assist students in their placement and scheduling of classes according to ability, interests, and academic needs.

Transition programs
Counselors help students in the transition from 6th to 7th grade and 9th to 10th grade by providing information through orientations, parent nights, classroom visits, and/or assemblies. Transfer students have an individual conference for orientation and scheduling.

Testing
Counselors coordinate and administer group achievement tests and interpret test results for students and parents.

Monitoring educational progress
Counselors consult with students, teachers and parents who express concerns about a student's educational progress. They can develop strategies to help resolve academic or behavioral problems or provide referrals to appropriate community agencies.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

Individual counseling
Counselors assist students in resolving their personal, social, educational, and career concerns on a one-to-one basis. Counselors can also provide referrals to community resources.

Career guidance
Counselors assist students in planning their post-junior and senior high programs. They insure that students receive information on high school graduation requirements and offer information on career opportunities including entrance requirements for jobs, colleges, and vocational training.

How do students arrange to see their counselor?
Counselors are assigned to students according to the students' last names, Terry Thompson is assigned to all students whose last name begins with A-J. Julie Higgins is assigned students whose last name begins with K-Z. Students are welcome to come into the Counseling Office to make an appointment. Counselors see students in crisis immediately.

How do parents arrange to talk with their child's counselor?
Parents call and ask for the Counseling Office at (425) 881-2079. Our secretary Kristi Parnell will assist them in contacting the appropriate counselor and making an appointment.

How do parents find out how their child is progressing?
Parents receive mid-term, term and semester report cards which are mailed.  Parents may also check WebGrader anytime to see their child's progress.

What should parents do if their child is not progressing satisfactorily in school?
Some problems may be resolved by just talking with the child's counselor to gather ideas, suggestions and alternatives.  Schedule changes can be made and special testing can be arranged for all students.
