The music department will again be "humming" with activities. All students in grades K-6 receive instruction each week from a music specialist. Ward Brannman will provide a before school instrumental program (5th-6th) at Kamiakin Jr. High.
All students are continually focusing on learning the basic elements of music such as rhythm, meter, melody, form, texture, and music controls. They have many opportunities to perform music for their peers, teachers and parents. This could be in a concert or during their music class time. It could be in large group, small group, or a solo setting.
curriculum includes listening, singing, movement, and playing music. Music comes from "classical," contemporary, historical American, and multicultural sources. Many facets of music are also introduced: The third grade studies the many aspects of Ballet, Symphony, and Opera. The fourth grade has a concentrated unit on the Symphony Orchestra. The fifth and sixth grades will be introduced into the world of technology using a computer and midi software.
The PE and Music departments have worked together the past few years and developed units for first and second grades that coincide with a social studies/science unit that one of the grade levels are studying during that month. Classes are combined for one week each month where Mrs. Larson and Mrs. Elliott team teach songs and movement games/activities that are related to the unit.
The music room is a very busy and fun place to be at John Muir. Activities, play practices, African drumming, and singing can be found there throughout the year. It is a happy and very energetic place to be!
