We have
shared reading everyday with the entire class. During independent time we
want to encourage children to read books, listen to tapes and use a
pointer as they read big books and charts. At the listening center there
are earphones, tapes and books to follow along.
During class
lessons we spend time with McCracken Spelling. These lessons prepare and
teach the children where the sounds occur in words and phonemic awareness.
During Reading
Workshop we are reading with our partners. We use many strategies that we
have learned in our mini-lessons. We practice these skills such as using
our magic finger, going L-R, return sweep, using pictures to help tell the
story, sounding out words to help us read, and many other strategies.
Please look for individual notes to come home with your child on what they
are specifically working on.
Book
Baggies are a part of the Reading Workshop.
They
will shop for books every week. In the beginning of the year we do not
have children in levels. In January I begin to put them in "Just
Right Books". These are books that fit their reading, they will be color dot books. They will pick 4 dot
books, and 2 books from our categories. They will have a total of 6 books
in the book shelves. They will bring home a book every night, please
remember to have them bring their baggies back each day. Please encourage
your child no matter what level they are reading at, don't discuss their
level, I do not discuss their level, I say "these books fit you as a
reader". If they don't
bring their baggie back they will not get another book to take home. If
they loose a book it will need to be paid for before they can begin taking
home their baggies.
