Variable Science Project

Project due and presentation due December 6, 2007

Scientific Investigation Form        Rubric

As a final project for your Variable unit in science, you are going to design and carry out your own controlled experiment and then share what you learned with the entire class.   As we have learned this fall a controlled experiment has one changed or manipulated variable.

The first thing you will need to do is decide on a scientific questions that you would like answered by doing an investigation.  Once you have decided on the investigation you want to perform, fill out the Project Proposal sheet.  You should write the question you are planning to investigate and list materials you think you will need.  Once you have done this please show it to me.   This needs to be done and approved by Mrs. Brokaw by Monday November 20.

Once your project has been approved, you will begin designing and carry out your experiment.   You will need to fill out the Scientific Method form as you do your investigation.  Don’t forget to include your Data/Results, conclusion and a picture.  You may want to also organize your results in a way that helps when you present your finding to the class. (Poster, pictures or power point.)   Scientific Investigation Form

On presentation day, you will not be doing your experiment but rather sharing your findings with the class.  You will have 3 minutes to present your project to the class.  In those 3 minutes you should talk about the following:

1.       What were you trying to find out (your question )?

2.     What materials did you need to do your investigation?

3.     What procedure did you follow to complete your investigation?

4.     What did you learn (your data/results and conclusion)?

Don’t forget you can help explain your project by having visuals such as a poster showing your data or graph of results or a power point showing your data and results.   Don’t forget to practice your presentation.

Your project and presentation are due on December 6.

Rubric for Grading

4 – WOW you are the next Nobel Prize winner in Science! I have filled out the scientific method sheet in detail.  I have included detailed pictures explaining my investigation.  I have only one changed or manipulated variable in my project.  My presentation is detailed.  The presentation lasts for 3 minutes and includes detailed visuals that help the class fully understand what I did.

3- Good job! Super Scientist! I have filled out the scientific method sheet completely and have included pictures that describe how my investigation was carried out.  I have only one changed or manipulated variable in my project.  My presentation last for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes and includes visuals that help the class to understand what I did.

2- Almost There.  You’re a scientist in training!  I have filled out my scientific method sheet but have not included all of the information needed or have not included much detail.  My drawings show some of the things that happened in my investigation.  I have only one changed or manipulated variable in my project but it is hard to figure out what it is.  My presentation is under 2 ½ minutes but I don’t include any visuals.

1-  Your scientific method sheet is not filled out or is missing a majority of the information needed.  You do not include any drawings of your investigation or your drawings do not relate to the investigation.  You do not include a changed or manipulated variable or you have more than one changed or manipulated variable.  My presentation is under 1 ½ minutes and I don’t include any visuals.
