For this project, you’ll create a comic strip based on a part of the book you read. Your comic strip need not be humorous, but it must include illustrations, dialogue, and action. Read through the comic section of a few different weekly newspapers to get an idea of what typical comic strips are like.
Materials
· Large sheet of white construction paper
· Thin markers or colored pencils
· Ruler
Procedure
1. Choose
a book from a new genre on the reading wheel and read it.
2. Select
an important or exciting part of the book that you would like to retell.
Find a part that will allow you to include action and dialogue.
3. Include this scene in your book summary. To help you build a great summary, go to http://scholastic.com/kids/homework/sandwich_make.asp Skip the drawing section of the “sandwich” because that is your comic strip. Your summary will include:
* title and author
* plot summary
* exciting scene description
* character description
* setting description
* your
opinion
4. Refer to your summary as you sketch your strip. Decide what will go in each panel. Your comic strip needs to include a minimum of eight panels. You may draw stick figures if you would like, but the artwork must be your own. Make sure to give characters some identifiable characteristics so that the reader can tell them apart. Also, make sure that the sequence of events is clear and easy to follow.
5. Divide
your paper into eight panels with a ruler. Include a header and footer for
your comic’s title and the book information. Trace over pencil lines with
marker. See the example below. It’s OK to make some panels larger and some
smaller, depending on what you want to include in each one.
6. Draw and write in pencil first, then copy over with pen or thin marker. (You can type the dialogue if you prefer and glue it into place.) Be sure to keep the illustrations and text as neat as possible. Then color your entire comic strip. There shouldn’t be any white space within the panels.
7. Give your comic strip an original title. Include your name at the top, like the example. In the footer, along the bottom, write the book title and author.
8. Complete the rubric. Turn in your comic strip, your book summary and your completed rubric all together.
