Library Rubric (September 2006)
The mission statement for Lake Washington School District libraries is: To ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information. Keeping this mission in mind, the district has developed a library curriculum. The following effort-based rubric has been created to inform students and parents as to what each standard is, how it is defined and may be achieved while working through the library curriculum. It should be understood that if a particular section within a standard is outstanding (such as: fits most of 4 but repeatedly has lost or overdue materials) it may negatively impact a student’s standing.
Primary students (K-2) do not have formal assignments in library. They are expected to participate in group activities and simple tasks that indicate an understanding of specific library skills, ex: locating books by first letter in a call number.
4: Exceeds standard:
The student receiving a 4 demonstrates effort at all times. This student always pays careful attention to directions and is always prepared to participate. This student seeks extra help when he/she needs clarification to understand the instruction and accurately completes activities supporting curriculum concepts. This student moves beyond personal goals and focuses on actively contributing to others and the classroom learning experience.
ü Comes from student: exceeds expectations for a “3”.
ü Demonstrates consistent mastery of assignments and finishes within assigned timeline (if completed early, student uses time productively by reading or with permission, assisting others)
ü Willingly engages in discussions or states need for clarification, checks out materials of personal interest as well as from folder and responsibly manages materials
ü Self-motivating and managing
3: At standard:
The student receiving a 3 demonstrates effort most of the time. This student pays attention to directions and is prepared to participate most of the time. This student seeks extra help most of the time when he/she needs clarification to understand the instruction and accurately completes activities supporting curriculum concepts.
ü Successfully completes assignments with minimal direction (activities and folder)
ü Pays attention and participates (in discussions/by asking questions; consistently checks out materials and responsibly handles materials -manages folder)
ü Asks for help, makes necessary corrections and completes assignments on own after an absence.
ü Self-manages behavior and is a positive presence in class
2: Approaching standard:
The student receiving a 2 demonstrates effort some of the time. This student sometimes pays attention to directions and attempts to participate. This student sometimes seeks extra help when he/she needs clarification to understand the instruction but needs direct supervision or a general reminder to complete activities supporting program curriculum concepts.
ü Attempts to complete assignments (may need some corrections), seeks help and accepts offer of extra time to improve or complete assignment
ü Participates occasionally (check out is inconsistent, occasional over-dues or lost books, does not manage folder)
ü May need occasional behavior reminders
1: Not at standard:
The student receiving a 1 does not show an adequate level of effort. This student consistently does not pay attention to directions and often does not participate. This student does not seek extra help when he/she needs clarification to understand the instruction and does not complete activities supporting curriculum concepts.
ü Minimal attempt at completing assignments or incorrectly completed, rarely seeks help or refuses offer of extra time
ü Rarely or never participates without being selected (little to no checking out of materials, consistently loses materials or returns damaged materials)
ü Frequent re-direction of behavior to help reflect a more positive disposition during library
N/A Not applicable: This student does not attend this specialist class or is too new to be assessed.
