Important Information

Attendance and Tardiness: Children need to arrive at school at 8:55 a.m. in order to begin class at 9:00 a.m. Teaching your child the importance of good attendance and being on time are invaluable lessons that establish important patterns for their education. If your child is tardy, s/he needs to go to the office to get a late pass, BEFORE coming to the classroom.

Early Dismissal: If your child needs to leave early for school, for whatever reason, please go to the office first. They will call the room, and at that point I will send your child down to meet you in the office.

Volunteer Check In: When visiting school please remember to check in at the office FIRST.

Snack and Lunch: We will have time for a 5-minute snack before our morning recess. Please make sure this is a healthy snack that can be eaten in 5 minutes and is easily managed by your first grader. Please no candy or juice for snack. Some healthy choices might be: celery with peanut butter, carrots, fruit, granola bar, yogurt, graham crackers, etc. We eat lunch at 12:00 p.m.  Healthy, well-rounded lunches help give children energy to last until the end of the day. Make sure items are easy for them to open on their own, and don’t forget spoons or forks if necessary.

Water bottles: Children may bring water bottles to drink.  The water bottles will be kept on the student’s desk as long as this privilege is not abused.  These bottles will be sent home each Friday to be washed.

Birthdays: This special day is celebrated with song and good cheers.  Birthday treats to share are welcome.  Please have your child bring them in a container in the morning before school.  Please keep treats simple such as ice cream bars, ice cream cups, cookies, brownies, doughnuts, or candy bars. Please do not send drinks, cupcakes, cake or treats that require plates, forks, etc.  At the end of the year we will celebrate summer birthdays as ½ birthdays. You will be notified of the celebration date.  Each child will bring home Lucky the Leopard on his/her birthday and keep him for 3 nights. Children are asked to record the adventures they have with Lucky in his traveling journal. They will be asked to share the journal with the class on Lucky’s return. Please make sure Lucky and his journal are sent to school after his 3-night stay.

NOTE: Please mail birthday party invitations.  Do not pass out invitations at school.

Book and Software Orders: Please send all orders in a sealed envelope with a check (no cash) made out to Scholastic.

Organizing Your First Grader: Some first graders are born organized, but most are not.  As adults, we have to teach them this important life skill: Designate a consistent place to keep the library books, take-home folder, backpack, etc.  Make sure your child has everything they need when they leave the house. Find a quiet place to study and work.  Try a special corner of a table or desk away from distractions.  Keep a tote or drawer for school supplies (pencils, sharpener, crayons, scissors, colored pencils, glue stick, ruler, paper).  Having handy supplies encourages creativity, work habits, and neatness.
