Lakeview Has a New Groove!

By Maggie and Zain

One morning, all of the sudden, a mysterious, light blue slug bug pulled into the parking lot of Lakeview Elementary. The windows were tinted, so we couldn’t see who was inside. Without warning, a red, glossy, shoe popped out of the bug. Just then the bell rang and we scurried off to our classroom. That very day, we had music as our specialist. The time went by so quickly we didn’t even notice it was 10:00, music time. As we arrived in the music room, a foot appeared from behind the desk. We both looked down in astonishment to see the red, glossy, shoe. The affectionate, young lady stood up and greeted us with a high-five. We had a fabulous time with Miss Teigen; we decided to do this article on her. We asked some questions about her. Here is a little summary about Miss Teigen. Her name is Rachel Teigen, her sisters name is Lara. Miss Teigen grew up in Berly, California. She has always been interested in music and theater. She enjoys hanging out with her friends, rollerblading, working out, and going to concerts, and plays when she has free time. She bought her blue convertible slug bug last summer; it was like love at first site. It has always been her dream car. Miss Teigen will be a wonderful music teacher for Lakeview elementary.

Are you ready for a fantastic time? From awesome music and great food to rollerblading and hanging out with friends, Skate King is the best place to go if you want to have fun! When you get through the doors to the “skating” area you could have brought skates, or you can rent skates. If you choose to rent skates, you have the option of renting roller blades ($4.00), or traditional skates (free). (Actually just until your mom “makes” you leave). Join us on Thursday,  October 5 for a fantastic night!

Teacher Column

By Miss Keppler

We have had a fabulous beginning to the 2006 school year! I am so fortunate to be able to work with such an amazing, fun, talented, enthusiastic, and hard working group of students.

Much of our reading and writing curriculum in September supported our efforts in publishing our first edition of our student generated newspaper. Students have read local newspaper articles, researched topics, conducted interviews, written and edited articles, gathered photographs, and developed our newspaper design. I am delighted with the result!

In math, we have completed the first quiz of our statistics unit Data About Us. Students are learning methods of collecting, displaying, and analyzing data. 90% of the students met or exceeded grade level standards on this quiz. Way to go! Our next unit, Bits and Pieces I, will begin in mid-October, and focuses on fractions, decimals, and percents.

After finishing our short science unit on the human brain, we have begun “Earth History,” a geology unit . We have taken a virtual tour of the Grand Canyon, examined rock samples, and tested rocks for calcite with hydrochloric acid. We are beginning to develop an understanding of how the layers of rock formed on the Earth’s crust.

During our social studies time, we have been reviewing world geography and elements of a map. This is in preparation for our Heritage unit which will begin in the second week of October.

We are definitely off to a great start! We are working hard and  having a lot of fun learning together.

Student Council:

Interview with Ms. Settlemyer

By: Bailey and Cody

If you want to try and make a difference at our school then join student council! If you are interested in joining you will have to run for office. You can run for office if you are in 5th or 6th grade. The purpose of having a student council at our school is to try and create leadership and community within the school.

If you are going to run you will want to ask either Mrs. Settlemyer or Ms. Teigen because they are going to be in charge of the entire council. The race for office will start at the beginning of October. The reason we need a student council is because that way there will be more student run assembly’s and us students will be able to make a difference.

The Gabber Box

Study Time

By Margo and Laura

Managing Your Time

Plan your homework time ahead of time so you’re prepared. If you have an activity in the afternoon, make sure you do your work before or after (when you have time) so you won’t end up cramming it in at the last minute. You always want to do your best, so make sure to have plenty of time to do so. But be aware of the time, you don’t want to end up not completing your homework. Extra tip: do your homework sometime after school; don’t wait until morning to do it, when you don’t have very much time. You might find it a bit challenging to work when you’re still half asleep!

Quote: Half our life is spent to find something to do with the time we have rushed through life trying to save!

-Will Rogers

How to Get Comfortable

Find a quiet, private place to work independently. Pick a certain spot where you usually do your homework or studying, and make sure you are comfy. You can play music or have some other sort of background noise to make a learning space that is more comfortable for your style. If you are usually hungry while you work, snack on some healthy foods that will give your brain energy. Some healthy foods that you can eat while studying are: veggies, fruit, crackers, etc.

Quote : Home computers are being called upon to perform many new functions including the consumption of homework formally eaten by the dog.

-Doug Larson

Working with Someone

Working with someone will help your ideas flow well. Try finding different ways to study with friends and/or family. Some places you can have a study session are: A home, Library, or at school w/ teacher. Plan a time and place to meet.

Make sure to discuss any problems you’re having w/ friends, parents, or teachers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions in class or at home about your homework.

Here are some study ideas to try:

· Math: flashcards

· Science: Try new experiments that you can find online at home with an adult and friend!

· Writing: Write letters and stories to friends. You can also keep a journal to write about your everyday thoughts.

· Reading: Host a book club with friends and family members. Get together once a week and read together or read a chapter and then discuss the chapter at your meeting or gathering.

· Spelling: Write down and study words in the dictionary and spelling list if you have one

Quote: Two heads think better than one!

Book Critic

By Sophie

Two amazing books I read over the summer were Becoming Naomi Leon and Small Steps.

Becoming Naomi Leon is by Pam Munoz Ryan. Becoming Naomi Leon is about a girl who lives with her grandma in a trailer rancho. Suddenly, her mom comes back after years and Naomi has a lot of questions to ask her missing mom. How long will she stay? Why is she here? What’s going to happen? Read the book to find out.

The second amazing book I read was Small Steps by Louis Sachar.  This Newberry Award winning author wrote the sequel to Holes Small Steps tells the story of two friends named Armpit and X-Ray who met digging holes at Camp Green Lake.  After being released, Armpit decides to take small steps to improve his life.  His best friend, X-Ray, convinces Armpit to sell scalped tickets of the Kaira Deleon concert.  X-Ray believes it is an easy way to make quick cash.  Will these two teenagers make big money or get sent back to juvenile hall?  Where will their steps lead them?

The Seahawks Did it Again!

By Taylor

The Seahawks won again after a rough start in the beginning. In the fourth quarter it was tied 6 to 6 against Detroit. It was the fourth quarter with 10 seconds to go in the last part of the game. And who is this is Josh Brown; they have decided to kick a 42 yard field goal can. He did it!!! Josh brown wins another one for the Seahawks. All the Seahawks go and congratulate him for the 42 yard field goal.

The fans are going wild!! Brown said “that was the way he has always wanted to start the season.” Matt Hassle beck got sacked five times that game but threw 210 yards. Shawn Alexander was held at 51 yards for nine teen carries. Deion branch got traded from the New England Patriots to the Seattle Seahawks. Deion was a receiver. In the 2005 Super bowl Deion Branch 11 catches for 133 yards against Philadelphia. Last season he caught 78 passes for 998 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Writing this paragraph on the Seahawks was a fun experiment. It was a fun time learning and doing research on the Seahawks too. It was a challenging but fun

Good Bye Steve Irwin

By Taz and Sean

On September 4, 2006 at the age of 44, animal conservationist Steve Irwin, aka (crocodile hunter), died while filming “Oceans Deadliest” at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. A bull ray passed underneath him. The sting ray felt threatened so it lashed its barbed tail upwards piercing the heart of Steve Irwin. While in the water, Steve Irwin pulled the barb out hopping he would live. His film crew rushed him out of the water onto his boat. Seconds later he died. He will truly be missed by his family and his fans.

After 9/11

By Michael

During the 5 years after 9/11 in the United States, the impact of the tragic event on the U.S Airline industry caused it to slump. People became scared to fly because they didn’t want to crash into buildings. The extra security makes it harder to get on a plan and it’s too much of a hassle to get on a plan. The airline industry had to lower, and cut costs and improve efficiency. I feel annoyed because people who want to go on a plain have to wait more time because of more security.
