WEB SITE VERSION of Weekly Newsletter

Month of:  April/May/June 2008

Hey Parents!
I want to thank you for helping your child keep on top of all the things we've had going on (or maybe your child is keeping YOU on top of things ).
But wait! We still have lots to accomplish in the next month and a half.
I've been so impressed with the kids' state report efforts. I know I will thoroughly enjoy reading each child's "work of art." I was proud of the kids' presentations and projects. This is definitely a memorable class project. They have certainly worked very hard on this lengthy project. This experience will greatly help your child in sixth grade and beyond. I hope you put this report in a safe place for your child to have and to look back fondly and proudly years from now as a strong academic memory from fifth grade. You parents should be ready to kick up your heels and have your own report celebration. I will be displaying their reports in the classroom when I finish grading them. It can take me up to three weeks to read and evaluate them. Thanks in advance for your patience.
Your child's project/presentation sheet will be in next week's Friday envelope. We now embark on our Wax Museum project, so don't poop out on me yet. YOU will earn your summer off from school as much as your child. It will be here before you know it so hang in there! Have a wonderful weekend,  Brenda

UPCOMING BOAT TRIP
On May 8th you will receive info. about our May 22nd boat trip aboard the Argosy. The cost of the charter bus (we leave at 8:00) AND the boat trip will be $50 per person. There will be an opportunity for any parents to sponsor another child or to contribute some extra money. No child will be left out of this fun, educational field trip. Permission slips and money are due by
May 15th. I thank you in advance for your timely return of these items. Please do not e-mail me in advance about wanting to join us. We can take a large number of parent chaperones-so no worries. You can note your desire to join us on your child's form and include your money. I appreciate anyone who can take the time to join us for this all day experience.

WHAT'S AHEAD?
Between now and June 18th, your child will be finishing the graphing/algebra unit (had a long WASL break), doing some measurement, finishing the motion and design unit (science), completing a final poetry sharing, AND working on the Wax Museum. Your child will be too busy to get spring fever!

Book Buddies
As a fun culmination of our year together, your child will have a secret book buddy. We will draw names in June. Each child will draw the name of a fellow student and buy him/her a paperback book (within a certain price range). On the last day, each child will get to unwrap a new book! Fun, huh? More info. to come home in June.

THANKS
I want to take this opportunity to thank you in advance for such a great year. I have thoroughly enjoyed coming to work each day. Each child has made significant growth. I know they will all have a successful sixth grade year! This was such a fun and highly motivated group to work with. I feel lucky to have had the chance to work with each one of them AND you. You are a wonderfully supportive group of parents. I know you will continue that next year. You make a difference in your child's education. Please keep in touch and best of luck. I hope that I, in some small way, impacted your child.

WAX MUSEUM
Your child should NOW be reading his/her chosen biography books. Please keep track of the dates that were on the blue info. sheet you signed. Your child must have all books read by May 9th. Your child should also be filling out important dates on the timeline sheet on the back while reading. We have such a great variety of famous people for our Wax Museum this year. Be sure to mark

READ ACROSS USA
Just a reminder that your child needs to complete Zone 1 by June 6th. Your child may turn in 5 book sheets at a time, so don't wait until the last minute. Children passing each zone are listed on our class web site. Please check with your child as to his/her status and get those sheets in!

HOMEWORK HALL OF FAME
There will be one more homework celebration for those kids who only missed 1 assignment or less turned in on time. Most of the kids have really gotten into a good homework return habit. Some kids need to work on their consistency for next year. You will receive a special note if your child qualifies for this last round. He/she gets to eat lunch in the classroom and have an ice cream treat. Way to go!

POETRY SHARING
The last poetry sharing of the year will be partner poems. Your child and his/her chosen partner should have a poem chosen as of today. Your child will need to practice frequently on his/her own and with the partner. This can be after school or during recesses. There is no theme this month, but each partner should have a fairly equal number of lines. Each child should have his/her own object to share as usual. This is always a fun way to end our poetry sharings. Please check with your child. The last poetry sharing will take place on 30th.

CHALLENGE OF MONTH
There is also only one more challenge for the year. It will happen on May 28th. This last challenge will require your child to know states and their capitals. I've been pleased with the amount of kids taking the optional challenge each month. These are all things your child SHOULD know going into sixth grade. Please encourage your child to study for this last challenge.

HELPFUL?
I hope you have found both the monthly newsletters and class web site to be helpful to you this year. It is always my goal to keep parents informed of all class events and assignments. I hope that goal has been attained once again this year. I can tell you all read things carefully as you have been on top of things this year. I will be sending home a short web site survey. I would appreciate you taking a few minutes to give me your feedback so I can make any needed changes/improvements for next year. As always, I value your time and opinion. Mahalo!
