The backhand is the throw everyone knows. The key is to throw the backhand with spin. Throw it with the same authority you would use to snap a towel. That will give you the wrist snap necessary for the disc to fly fast and accurate. With the backhand, follow through smoothly after the release.
The flick, also called the forehand, is a must for ultimate players. It takes practice to get it right, but once mastered it's the throw of choice in many situations. The flick is thrown on the opposite side as the backhand. It's a quick "flick", hence the name. Grip firmly, but not too hard, making sure that the middle finger contacts the inside rim of the disc. The motion is like flicking a towel or shaking something icky off your fingers. The most common problem is "rolling the wrist" which results in an almost vertical flight which lands and rolls. Solutions: throw under a partners outstretched arm; watch your hand and make sure that after you let go your palm faces up; do not follow through.
A fast, hard-to-catch throw thrown by advanced players. It flies upside down.
