My Winter Break By
Barrett On
my winter break we drove over to Moses Lake for Christmas.
The day we drove over there was Christmas Eve. When we got there we
unpacked our stuff at my Grandmas house then we went over to my Aunt Pam’s
house to watch my cousins open there presents.
After that we went over to my Aunt Penny’s house to eat and exchange
presents. When we got to my Aunt Penny’s house we unloaded the presents and
put them under the tree. The things I got were Mario Tennis, lots of clothes,
Video Tapes, Tic Tac Toe and lots more.
We went back to my Grandmas house at 11:00. Right when we got back I had
to go to bed. In the morning I woke up walked to my Grandmas living room to see
what Santa brought me. The things Santa brought me were lot of candy the new A2
Scooter that has shocks a wheelie bar and lights in the back that go off when
you do a bunny hop. Another thing I got was a little plane and that’s all I
got from Santa. The next day we went home.
My
Christmas Vacation On Christmas Eve I went to my aunt Diana and my uncle Danny’s house
and I played with both of my cousin’s daughters and we opened presents. I
opened five. We had a lot of fun.
On Christmas day, I stayed home and opened presents from Santa. “Wink
Wink.” I got a snow cone maker. I made about 10 snow cones. I also got milky
pens. I also got a lot of American Girl stuff.
On the day after that I went shopping with my aunt Leslie. I bought a
strobe light and a robe. When we were in line for an Orange Julias at the mall,
a news reporter came. He interviewed my mom because she had a lot of bags.
That night, I went to one of my best friend Stevie’s houses to spend
the night. The next day, I went to the mall with Stevie. We had a lot of fun.
After that, I went to Cucina Cucina with Stevie. We talked and talked till about
11:00. Then we went home and went to bed. The End
Winter
Break
By:
Angie Over winter break I had lots of fun.
On Friday I went to Kelsey’s house for a Christmas party.
They had Santa come. I got
Little Women on tape. I saw an old
friend at the party. That night I
watched Home Alone 3. On Saturday I stayed home with my family and made cookies.
We played the card game Nuts. Then
my mom read a story and we fell asleep. Christmas
Eve I made plates of cookies for my friends, Heather and Alicia.
When I brought them the cookies to their house, Heather was about to go
skiing, and then we talked a while. Christmas
morning I woke up, ran in my parent’s room and jumped on their bed to wake
them up. I got lots of cool things
for Christmas. Christmas night I
went to the Bowling Alley with Lisa, Suria and Lisa’s dad. We played two games but then we had to leave. I had about 4
sleepover all through the break. On Sunday I went to my friend’s house, her
name is Alicia. On Monday I went to my dads co. worker party at Jenell’s
house. I learned how to play the drums.
My Winter Break
This
winter break I did a lot of stuff. On Christmas Eve, my very good friend, died
of pneumonia and cancer at about 6 o’clock.
Christmas day. On Christmas
Ashley woke me up. Normally I wake everybody up but not this year any way. I got
up and went to the living room. We opened our stockings. I got a lot of
paraphernalia then we opened our presents. Next we went to my grand fathers.
When I got there T played with my cousins Ally and Holly. We went on the beach
and played. I found five dead salmon skeletons, and then we had Christmas
dinner, and went home.
The
next week I mostly watched T.V. On Wednesday, I went with Kirsten and her mom
and my mom to look for fabric. They’re going to make a blanket. I got a
headache, and then a stomach ache, and threw up. On Tuesday I walked to
Starbucks. The next day we went to ski at Alpental. New Years Eve I made cookies and
a shake, and stayed up till’ 12:05. Then fell fast asleep. In the morning, I
watched the Rose bowl parade. Then did nothing. Later that day, I went to the
movies and saw The Emperor’s New Groove. It’s a hysterical
movie. That’s all I did over the break. I did a lot of fun stuff.
Nose-Biting Breeze By
Ally
Holly walked up to the long line and waited for a half an hour.
When she was up, she took the pictures with Santa and told him what she
wanted and said good-bye.

THE PERFECT THING FOR ME Chapter One By
Cassady It was a bad afternoon. Annie had nothing to do. She was bored. All she could think of was to draw, but the problem was she didn’t want to draw. The reason was she was drawing most of the time yesterday and the day before. So she sat on the couch for a while just being bored. There was no one to play with because her older brother Jacob was still at school. While she was sitting on the couch she saw something move across the living room. It was headed towards her. So she decided to just stay seated. The thing came over to her and said in a quiet voice, “I’m Fairy Marigold. You can call me Marigold for short. What’s your name?” the fairy asked. “My name is Annie,” replied Annie. “When I was flying up above I saw that you looked like you were bored,” replied Marigold. “So I flew down to see if you would like to come with me to Fairyland.” “What’s Fairyland?” Annie asked. “It’s a beautiful sunny place where almost all fairies go for a vacation spot,” she replied. “Oh yes!” she cried. “We don’t want to waste any time, so let’s get going, shall we?” said Marigold. Cassady is Mr. Coulter's 3rd grade daughter.
MY OPINION By Kellie 11/8/00 This is what I think about the election: it is fingernail biting. This is what I mean: it makes people nervous because it is such a close election. SOME others think that they are both not eligible to be president. I watched the news last night. The map was red for George W. Bush and blue for Al Gore and Ralph Nader had no states. Last night the map was mostly covered with red! I like George W. Bush a little better but that is just my opinion. P.S.
I don't know much about either of them. NEVER
UNDERESTIMATE By Patti Payne 11/9/00 (This article appeared in the Eastside Journal, the largest newspaper on the Eastside. It was written by long-time Seattle-area journalist Patti Payne, formerly of KOMO radio.) In teacher Brad Coulter's fifth grade class at Lakeview, kids were abuzz
about the horserace nature of this election. "I was thinking Bush was getting all the states," student Chris said. "I don't care who's president as long as they are good to our country," Ally said. "Most astonishing election, fingernail-biting," Carson said. What lessons were learned? "Don't have a hissy fit if you don't win," Carson said. "Don't be a president," Sheldon said. "Don't bet on the president, you might lose," Neethi said. "Don't call your opponent until you know for sure," Bobby said, "and pretend that reporters are weatherman. They don't know anything." "Never watch elections," Paul said. "Don't try to read the future," Kirsten said. "If you're gonna be a president, prepare to talk a lot and fight a lot," said Will . "Keep your future clean," Kellie said. "I think a woman should run for president," Kelsey said. "Never underestimate the power of Florida," Molly said.
MY DREAM HOME By Kellie 11/8/00 My Dream Home would be out in the country. It would be a two story house. But it would be too far too drive so I guess it would be a summer home. And in the winter our neighbors would take care of it. The first floor would have two bedrooms, one for my mom and the other for my brother. My room would be on the second floor. Outside there're twelve horses and puppies running around. We would have 100 acres. My next door neighbor would be my friend Isabel. She would have some horses too! She would also be my only next door neighbor. Town would be a fifteen minute drive away. The town has a mall, grocery store, clothing store, shoe store, bank, gift shop, book store, ice cream place, pet store, a place that breeds horses, and restaurants. Well that’s it! The End Enchanted
Woods By Hillary Grigsby 11/8/00
Once upon a time
there lived a beautiful princess. Her name was Rose. Rose lived with her Mother
and Father the queen and king, and last of all her snotty little brother Scott.
Ick, Rose was hot and bothered of her Silly little brother, because her Mother
and Father always paid attention to their little shhnuucckkems.
They always would say to him, “Soon you will be our little king all
grown and perfect for the job!!”
Rose and her family lived in a mysterious place called Zamerus. They’re
castle was surrounded by a beautiful forest with many Enchantments on the way.
In Zamerus there is a legend that a treasure is hidden in a cave called The Cave
of terror. In the cave, it was told that there was an evil dragon guarding the
treasure.

WHOOPS By Stephen 11/8/00 My New Mountain Bike New features
What I Do On It I went on an 8-mile bike ride from Uncle’s house to a
lake with a 15-foot diving board. At
least that’s where we were going to go, but I got too tired and had to stop,
when I stopped my Uncles put down their bikes and I had a tasty vanilla protein
drink. When my Uncle Bill picked up
his bike he found out that he had somehow put down his bike just right so that
his water bottle had landed right in some dog poop (Whoops!) and he picked up
his water bottle and wiped it off. But he didn’t drink any more water for the rest of the
trip. After that my Uncle Bill
speeded off really fast and we didn’t see him until we got home. Hello! This is my Magazine article and it’s about the construction and that kind of thing. Okay, because I’m using the computer next to the window I can see them working on the field and they’ve got a large white bulldozer pushing around dirt and some people with shovels digging every now and then. Okay that’s my segment on the field. Now for the gym. The gym is now done.
TERRACE PARK By Akshay 11/3/00 We
all go to Terrace Park some Fridays if the weather is ok. When we go to Terrace
Park we play ultimate Frisbee. But on Oct 27, 2000 we changed it to soccer. We
walk to the park. It’s near the school. Actually ultimate Frisbee is the mix
of football and Frisbee. Some times we go to the park with other classes. We
play three games of soccer, football and ultimate Frisbee. Children can choose
what they want to play. Only some kids play football. One Friday one class
joined us. They suggested playing soccer. That’s
how we started to play soccer. The class who joined us was Mr.Miele who teaches
4th grade. MY SUMMER VACATION By Angie 11/3/00 What
I did for my summer was… I played with my friends Heather and Lisa. Heather
invited Lisa and I to the Tennis Club. We had lots of fun there. Later
that month my family and I went to a place by the ocean. The place is called
Moclips. We went there for a week. We ate hotdogs, candy, sandwiches, and every
night we had a campfire and ate smores. On
our way home from Moclips we went horseback riding. Two days after, my family
and I went to New York to visit my uncle and aunts and cousins. My
uncle has a pool in his backyard. The day after we got there we went to the
Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. It was really fun. Then we went
back to their house. The next day we just stayed at their house for the day.
That night we went to Broadway. It was really fun. My uncle’s pool has a water
slide and a diving board. Friday night we stayed up till 3 in the morning
because our plane left at 4 in the morning New York time. We got home at 12 our
time. A couple days after, I went to Denny Park to swim with my friends. A
week after, I was invited to go to Evergreen State Fair. We went on 14 rides.
Then I rode bikes for 3 hours. Then I had to go to a reading class. After
class I went back to my friends house and we rode bikes for1 more hour. Two
weeks after my friend Alicia left to go to her dad’s house for 3 weeks. I went
to my brother’s fort that he and his friends built down in the woods by our
house. My
friend Lisa lost Alicia’s shoe in the bushes down at my brother’s fort.
Finally Lisa found the shoe at the fort. The next day I went bike riding with my
friends. On
September 3, 2000 my sister had a birthday even though her real birthday is
August 6th. We had all our cousins over. We have 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 8
fish. MY TRIP TO TEXAS By Annie 11/3/00 This
summer I went to Texas for my uncle’s wedding. My entire family was there. I
liked being a junior bridesmaid with my cousin Lauren. I also had fun playing
with my cousin Thomas. He is only 1. He runs around pointing at fans and lights
saying ba and he would push every button he saw.
Most of the time he pushed the elevator button and the ice machine
button. We had to watch most of the
time; it was a lot of fun. During
the wedding Becky was the maid of honor. She
got to carry the veil. She ran up
and carried the veil the rest of the day. She’s really hilarious. Another funny thing that happened
was that my Mom, Ellen, and my Aunt, Lourian, sang a song and they said they
would never sing in church again. At
the wedding reception, I sang Chapel of Love to my Uncle Frank and Aunt Lesley
who got married.
JUST WHERE I AM By Molly 11/3/00
If I could live anywhere I wanted and money was not an issue, I’d live
just where I live right now. I’d live there because I love my house and my
yard. My mom has worked really hard on making my backyard really beautiful with
flowers everywhere.
And my dad has worked really hard on the downstairs, making it a really
big miniature train track. It’s really fun to play with too.
I also like the area I live in too, Kirkland WA. I live very close to all
of my friends, too. One of my friends lives a couple blocks away, within walking
distance. Another of my friends lives down the street from me. I can walk to
school and back every day because I live pretty close. I like walking. The
grocery store is close too. I live a couple blocks away from my brother’s
school, it’s fun to go and play there. They have tire swings and bars and a
huge baseball field that you can play soccer, baseball and anything you want.
I’d live just where I am. THE FIELD TRIP By Justin 11/3/00
The bus ride was very crazy. It was packed full of people. The bus number
was 255. In the afternoon we missed the bus by just two minutes so we took a
littler sized bus over. 30 people had to stand up in our class. Different kinds
of people, even dads, had to stand.
The giant sequoias were huge. It took over15 people, holding hands to get
around the tree. They were very hollow inside but it was cool still. Some played
the drums on the sequoias. It made
a hollow sound. We had a great time our field trip. MY
ASTONISHING STORY By Jenna 11/3/00 Over
the summer I went to my best friend’s house in Oregon, but not for the whole
summer. I brought my dog “Murphy”. I brought my dog because my friend Tori
(that’s her name) has a dog named “Stout”. “Murphy” & “Stout”
are both labs. “Stout” is a chocolate lab & “Murphy” is a yellow
lab. My friend Tori & her family moved to Oregon in April. I miss her very
very very much. Another part of the summer I went to my dad’s work. Most of
the summer I stayed at home building a hut with my dad & my brother. We are
almost done with it. Inside of the hut will be a game table & a big hammock,
so at night my brother & I can sleep in the hut. The game table is for on
rainy days we can play games inside the hut. At the end of the summer I was
excited to be in Mr. Coulter’s class. When I saw all the joyful faces, I was
glad to be in this class. I have three great table buddies, Hillary, Kelsey,
& Molly. I had so much fun over the summer. I also went to three circuses.
Circus De lay & a circus movie in Oregon, with my friend Tori & her
family & my family. In the beginning of the summer I went to another circus,
live. I went to Bulwinkles Family, Fun, & Food Center, with my dad &
brother. I had lots & lots of fun over the summer. THE NEW GYM By Rachel 11/3/00 On
November 1st the students at Lakeview got to experience the new gym
for the first time. It is a much-improved version of the old gym. First of all
the walls are carpeted up to about 7 feet and second new chin-up bars and 2 more
climbing ropes, all new. There has
also been a new stage and music room added. The
basketball hoops are all full size (there’s four) and have new orange tape on
the backboards. The court is also the lunchroom and has lots of room for tables.
The lines for the basketball court are new too. No
matter what, the gym/lunchroom is the best we’ve ever (my opinion) had. FOUR SQUARE By Will 11/3/00 On
October 4, 2000, Carl came to school to paint four squares. He painted 7 four
squares. The first two are in front of the gym and the five other ones are by
the turn-around. If you go to our website at wwwlak.lkwash.wednet.edu, go to
Coulter and you can see him painting the four square Thank you , Will IF MONEY WAS NOT AN ISSUE By Carson 11/3/00 If
money was not an issue I would live in a 20 story mansion and have a Olympic
size swimming pool, basketball court, bowling alley, soccer field, baseball
field, ice hockey rink, tennis court, racket ball court, 400 acre backyard with
a huge trampoline, 10,000 rooms and a Jacuzzi in each one. It would also be in
Florida next door to Ben’s house. PRINCE'S SUMMER VACATION By Prince 11/3/00
This summer I got a new scooter! It’s
really cool. I love it. My friend and me love our new scooters. It goes really
fast down hills. I got it at 7-eleven for 79.99. It’s a lot cheaper then other
stores. My
friend’s name is James. We have one of the rarest Pokemon cards in the world.
It’s so cool. The Pokemon card is called Charizard. We trade a lot of cards.
My parents bought a 7-Eleven down the street. It’s really fun there.
I
went to Seattle Center. The best thing that was there was Laser Tag. It’s so,
so fun. There’s fog and glowing walls. I was 2nd place. It was
fun. I loved it. Then
I went to Mt. Rainer. It was the only mountain with snow, but not at the bottom.
So we had to walk all the way to the top. And I hated that. IN
OCTOBER By Mr. Coulter During the entire month of October, I
never bought gas, not even once. I bought gas on September 30th, but not once in
October. You might think that my car is a lemon. Nope. It's a beauty. I rode my bike to school 17 times in October. You'd think that in October in a place like Seattle it would rain all the time. But it doesn't. My raingear came in handy only twice!
By Kirsten 10/31/00 I am sitting at my desk. Next to me, on my left, is Rachel. On my right, is Angela. In front of me is Duckey, the computer. Kelly and Andrea are on Duckey. Mr. Coulter's desk is in front of me to my right. He is on his computer. He has a shelf full of books behind his desk. Next to the bookshelf is a wall with a whole bunch of pictures of his kids on it. He has music playing. Mr. Coulter's bike is sort-of next to him. Leaning against the locker, behind the filing cabinets. Justin is looking at the globe. It is in front of me and to my left. The computer Virus is over there to. Ally is on that computer. Prince is talking to Ally. Ben is in the corner, whispering to Carson and Paul.
Angela just read me her
article. It’s called “ If I were Famous“. It’s good.
Staring at the wall in front of me I found The turn-in trays are right in front of Mr. Coulter's desk. They’re on top of a shelf. Some of the books on the shelf include, The Nutcracker and The World Almanac. The trays say “ Office”, “Mr. Coulter” and “Homework”. They're ugly. Our room is noisy, hot and tiny, but at least we have something. Ahhh, but in March, when our new school arrives, our room will be cool, somewhat quiet and large. - Ed
MATH By Kelsey 10/31/00 Math in Mr. Coulter’s fifth grade class and Ms. Spafford’s fifth and sixth grade split class is going very well. About seven or eight kids from Ms. Spafford’s class are coming over to Mr. Coulter’s portable to do fifth grade math, while seven or eight kids from our class are going over to Ms. Spafford’s portable (only for math). In Mr. Coulter’s class, they’re learning multiplication of whole numbers and decimals, as well as rounding and estimating of products. Things seem to be going smoothly. In Ms. Spafford’s class we’re learning front-end estimation, contributing and distributing. We’re also listening to a story about math. We just started it though , so we’re not that far in it.
MOLLY'S FIRE: A BOOK By Kirsten and Neethi 10/31/00 Molly’s Fire is by Janet Lee Carey. This story is based in Keenan, Maine in 1944. Molly’s father went off to war. One day a telegram comes saying her father is presumably dead. The Germans shot his plane down. But Molly doesn’t believe that. She’s convinced she could tell if he certainly was dead. When a mysterious pocket watch show up, she’s convinced it’s a sign from her. Were going to read this book after we finish Walk Two Moons. Next week, on November 2nd, we’re walking to Park Place Books to hear the author read and answer questions about the book.
TUSK By Stephen 10/31/00 Some of the construction workers found a tusk in the parking lot, as I’m sure you all know. It was found in a layer of uncompressed peat, which means that there were no glaciers on top of it, which also means that it came after the glaciers. The glaciers came along 13,500 years ago so that means that the tusk almost surely came from after that time. That makes it more likely to be a Mastodon than a Mammoth, that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a Mammoth. It just means that it is more likely to be a Mastodon. So that’s my part of The Coulter’s Class Newsletter! EMP By Rachel 10/31/00 On January 19th our class will go to E.M.P. also known as The Experienced Music Project. Paul Allen, who is the co-creator of Microsof,t created the Experienced Music Project. He spent a lot of money on E.M.P. E.M.P. looks like a big building made of colored metal which it is. Each piece of metal that makes up E.M.P. is supposedly a different shape and size. E.M.P. is many different colors like blue, purple, and possibly green. It looks from far away a big piece of color just sitting there, but it isn’t it’s better. If you ever liked music you should go there. It has lots of kinds of music including blues and rock n’ roll. The End! TERRACE PARK 10/31/00 By Ben, Carson, Paul Every Friday we go to terrace park and play ultimate Frisbee. I will explain the rules: The rules are when you throw the Frisbee to your team and they drop the Frisbee the other team gets the Frisbee. You cannot run with the Frisbee. There is a rule called momentum so you can catch and take 1-3 steps. It cannot score a touchdown for you. There are at least seven players on each team and there are two end zones which the teams line up on and says ultimate and the other team throws the Frisbee and the other team that said ultimate try’s to catch the Frisbee and throws it to their team mates. Bonus!
Ideas for Team Names 1. The Ninnies 2. The Happy Hamsters 3. The Lorax 4. TheHedgy Hedgehogs 5. Bumbling Bees 6. Dashing Dogs 7. Thumbthing 8. Fuzzy Monkeys 9. Bong On The Dwarfs 10. The Worms 11. Popular Cows 12. Chunky Chickens 13. Ordinary Dad 14. 100 Page Barrier 15. Stone Temple Pirates CONSTRUCTION By Hillary 10/31/00 Construction at Lakeview is going very well. As you know,
they are still working on the gym for our new school. It should be
finished by around next week, the week of the 30th. Some
classes are helping move the equipment into the new gym They are also working on the new play field that will have games like: soccer, touch football, Ultimate Frisbee, and a nice space for us to run around on. Forman Katspan worker Kelly says, “We still don’t know when the field will be finished, but we’ve already done parts of the gravel, put the pipes in the ground for the sprinkler system, and made the ground level. Also we need to a layer of the three different types of sand on, put the trench in for the sprinkler system, and have the landscapers come and do their work. I can’t wait until the school is finished .It will be great!!
NOTE: All writing is done by students. Usually students start with a draft on paper using a pencil. They then do all of their own word processing. Mr. Coulter edits for publication, but rarely changes anything but an occasional glaring error. NOTE: Code names are fading away, replaced by actual first names.
