Writing Workshop

In writing workshop we do a variety of things.

Journals

The kids write about topics that are significant to them.

We spent the first two weeks learning about how to choose a topic. I model how to brainstorm a list of topics. As time has gone by, the kids tend to walk in the door with important things to write about.

We try our best to spell words the best we can, but the focus is on getting ideas on paper.

Structured Writing

This year we will be learning how to write stories and non-fiction pieces.

When we write stories, we focus on having a beginning, middle and end. We develop characters, setting, problem and resolution.

In non-fiction pieces we will learn how to introduce a topic with a topic sentence and use supporting reasons, details and facts, followed by a conclusion.

Six Traits

In any writing we do, we consider the following traits of good writing.

Ideas and Content

Organization

Voice

Word Choice

Sentence Fluency
