Leaves

                       The leaves   of the Indian plum are beautiful. They are lance shaped, lance means long and skinny. Their about four to six inches long and have a grayish green color. The leaves texture is furry and soft. The edge is a flexible feeling. There are no lobes in this leaf, it is an oval shape. They are also edible.

Flowers

            This interesting flower has a calm color of whitish-green. It also has five petals and is shaped like a bell. Its biggest height is two inches tall. The female’s flowers smell good and the male’s smells of cat urine.

Fruits and seeds

      The fruit is a food that the Native Americans ate. The berries are yellowish orange when young aged. When they are mature they are bluish-black. They are also borne on a red stem. Ovoid drooping up to ˝ an inch long.

Bark and stem or trunk

The barks color is silky reddish-brown to dark gray. The twig is a willowy green turning to reddish-brown, pith chambered, and conspicuous orange lenticels.  The twig also helps to heal wounds and the bark was used for tea along time ago.

 

Size and shape

      The Indian Plum is about six to twenty feet in height and twelve feet in width (AKA two meters). The shape of this plant is a cylinder with a round curving top.

 

 

Habitat and range

The habitat for this plant is stream banks to rather dry woods and low elevation. The range is from British Columbia south, from coast to west slope of cascades, through Washington Oregon and California.

Other Interesting facts

            The leaves and berries are edible. If you crush the leaf it will have a physically powerful scent of cucumber. Some people recognize the plant by its smell. Only eat berries in small amounts or your tongue will get black. They will appear in eastern grocery stores. Bark was used for tea along time ago.
