Field Trip
Look for the field trip permission slip going home today. We are going to a play at the Seattle Children’s Theater. Please return the form ASAP. We have space for five parent volunteers. (Parents will have to buy an additional ticket for themselves.)
Homework
Studying for spelling tests and keeping a reading log will be our main weekly homework. See below
1. First Spelling Test Next Friday
See attached spelling list. A paper copy will go home Monday. The first spelling test will be next Friday October 10th. Consider reading sight words and studying the spelling words part of the nightly homework routine.
Since this is our first test I will call it a “practice” and not put a grade on it.
2. Reading Log
Please look for the first reading log going home today. Use it to help your child establish the expectation of reading for at least 15 minutes per night. Return the reading log each Friday. (You can print a reading log form from the web site if you need to.)
Unit 2 Sight Words
I am sending home the sight words for Unit 2 today which covers the next six weeks. Student will be introduced to 5 new words per week.
Book Orders
Look for book order forms going home today. Thank Michelle Neves (Connor) for coordinating our class book order. She has included a note on how to order online if you prefer.
Reading Groups
We had reading group time three days this week. At this point I am still working out the appropriate book level for each student.
I am also working on student behavior expectations so I can work with students without interruption. Students did great following the routine of reading group time. Three things you can ask your child to work on:
· Using only the quietest voice during this hour
· Asking other students first if they have a question
· Interrupt my reading group only if absolutely necessary
‘Please Return Tomorrow’ Bags
On certain days students will come home with a book in a plastic bag labeled ‘Please Return Tomorrow’. This is the book students read with me during his or her reading group time. I ask that students read the book to someone at home and return the next day.
I cannot send home a new book until one is returned.
What to ask about this week:
· Pop corn party! (Friday)
· Reading Group time
· Great Bill Peet stories: Hubert’s Hair-Raising Adventure, The Wingdingdilly
· October scrap page
· Math: making a model with cubes of all the ways to make 10
· Reading with our 6th grade buddies
· Science: our weather calendar, measuring temperature
· Sweet Pickle Stories: Hippo, Kangaroo, Lion
