What We Value …
· At Peter Kirk we respect and appreciate the differences and similarities of others. We care about our school and community.
· We participate in community activities and work to improve and enhance our environment.
· We inspire confidence in others and ourselves. We take responsibility for our own actions.
Therefore … we have developed a set of non-negotiable student behaviors that will ensure a building environment that is in harmony with what we value.
i.e. “Please take out your math book.” Think safety and stop running in the hallways.” “I need for you to stop pushing in line.” “Hey, recess is over, you need to come in from the playground.” Are all examples of reasonable requests?
i.e. Vulgar, inappropriate language or physical gestures, ignoring reasonable requests, or using graphic drawings, or written language, constitute disrespectful behavior.
i.e. Acts of physical aggression, vandalism, harassment, bullying and self destructive behaviors are examples of unsafe behavior.
i.e. Acts of vandalism, usage or possession of controlled substances, leaving campus without permission and the possession or usage of weapons are examples of illegal behavior and should be reported immediately to the site administrator.
· Students who choose not to engage in appropriate behavior will be subject to progressive discipline.
· Poor choices may result in counseling by a teacher, a playground supervisor, the school counselor, or principal.
· Students may receive a “Communication Slip” detailing the misbehavior. Such reports must be signed by the student’s parent and returned to the office within two (2) days. If the student fails to return the slip, parents will be contacted and may result in detention (see attached policy)
· Persistent or severe misbehavior may necessitate one or a combination of the following: a “Discipline Slip”, a conference among the pupil, parents, teacher, counselor and principal, suspension or expulsion from school (see attached policy).
Communication slips are issued for those behaviors that can usually be eliminated by positive reinforcers and consistent follow-through by adults and supervisors. They are also given for behaviors that affect school climate and student success. Every day, the students have a new beginning. However, several Communication slips may indicate chronic inappropriate behavior at the Discipline Slip level. We send communication slips home so you are aware of your child’s choices at school. Your signature indicates you have seen the communication slip. Signed slips not returned within (2) days could result in a fifteen (15) minute detention.
*Verbal warning, time outs, loss of recess, apologies, school/community service, etc.
*Two communication slips in a day = Discipline slip and fifteen minutes detention after school. (Parents are called.)
*Communication slips repeatedly given could result in a discipline slip.
It is our belief that inappropriate behaviors warranting a discipline slip are those behaviors which are more serious in nature and pose a threat to the safety and well being of others or are disrespectful. Behaviors both in the classroom and on the playground may also be chronic in nature, thus interference to other students’ rights to a safe learning environment. “Discipline slip” offenses will accumulate during the entire school year.

SEVERE CLAUSE:

Use of objects as weapons
Harassing/bullying, or threatening behavior
Such acts will be subject to discipline, suspension or expulsion from school and/or referral to law enforcement authorities.
· School board policy prohibits the possession of weapons on school grounds or at any school sponsored activities. Any student found in possession of a weapon will be subject to immediate expulsion and/or referral to the local police or other appropriate agency (see attached policy).
