Reading

We are continuing our non-fiction studies by reading in our social studies text, science reading, and the SRA program. Students should be reading each night to achieve their AR goal. The deadline to reach their goal is June 8. Twenty percent of the point goal must be for non-fiction books. Later in the month, our class will be reading the The Seattle Times every morning. We will be discussing the news and scanning the newspaper for information. Each day a team of students will work on presenting a news program to the class by the end of the day. Newspapers in Education is a program that provides the free papers and studies for the classrooms. It is funded through donations by subscribers like you. If you are on vacation and stop the papers, think about donating the proceeds to NIE. Another way to give the gift of literacy is through the following link

Math

Our unit in measurement continues. We will measured just about everything we can in our class. We will explore length, weight, area , perimeter, capacity, volume, temperature and time. For the rest of the year, our studies include Data and Statistics, Algebra, and Probability.

Field Trips

Kirkland Wednesday Market

Our students have been invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Kirkland Wednesday Market on May 2.  We will eat lunch early at school, walk to the market, participate in the ribbon cutting at noon, and then spend some time touring the market stalls.  Students will need to bring a lunch that day, and they may want to bring some money for buying snacks or crafts. I still need a chaperone to join as on our walk to and from the Market Place.

UW Meany Hall

We have another 5th grade field trip coming up on May 4.  The classes will attend a performance of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company at Meany Hall on the University of Washington campus.  The company will be performing dances inspired by the paintings of the famous 20th century artist Jacob Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence’s work documented the history of his people, the social life of Harlem, and the struggles of the civil rights era.  There is no charge for the performance, and the PTSA is paying for our bus transportation.  We will eat lunch on campus after the performance, so students will need to bring a lunch and beverage.  Thank you to M. Guckenheimer and L. Scovel who have volunteered to chaperone. D. Bhowmik will also chaperone, but will meet us at the UW.
