THE CHANDOS PORTRAIT
OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
The Chandos Portrait is considered to be the most accurate representation that we have of Shakespeare in painting. Richard Burbage, who was a major actor and part owner of The Globe (with Shakespeare) was also a credible painter. He has often been credited with painting the Chandos portrait of Shakespeare, but there is no actual proof of who painted the portrait. The portrait is called the Chandos as it was once in the possession of the Duke of Chandos. The Chandos is by far the most attractive of the pictures of Shakespeare and is typical of English paintings, portraits and costumes of the period. In 1856 it became the property of Britain's National Portrait Gallery and has the distinction of being the first painting purchased by the Gallery.
