Ms. Birmingham - Misc. Classroom Procedures

TARDY POLICY

- Anyone not IN THE DOOR and IN YOUR SEAT will be counted

tardy.  I am very strict about this!

            - Refer to the student planner for the school's policy on tardies.

ABSENT YESTERDAY?

-          Check the assignment calendar.

-          Copy the class notes.

-          Get your papers from the black trays under the assignment calendar.

-          Turn in old homework to the teacher right away.

-          You have double the number of days absent to do the work.

-          See me RIGHT AWAY if this is a problem.  You have ONE week to make up labs or videos after school.  Be sure to check the white board for days I will not be available after school.

Complete thoughts!

ALL answers must be written in complete thoughts.  This means at least one sentence, and often 4 or 5.  “No”, “Yes”, or “5” are not complete thoughts.  “Yes, the sugar looked similar to salt” is a complete thought.  If your answer isn’t in a complete thought, it will get zero points.

LATE WORK (Labs, regular homework, videos)

I don't accept late work unless:

-          You were absent.  See notes above for that policy.

-          You've attached a Homework Pass to the work, and turned it in the next day – NO later.

Projects are not accepted late for any reason.  If you are absent the day a project is due, you'd better

get someone to bring it to school for you that day.  If this is going to be a problem for you, talk to me BEFORE the due date, and we might be able to work something out.

LABS AND HOMEWORK NOT DONE/TURNED IN ON TIME

- All labs must be pre-written completely in order to do the lab in class that day, and homework is expected to be done on time.  If the lab is not completely pre-written, the student will spend the class time doing the pre-write and then use the rest of the period to complete other homework or read.  They will have to make up the lab after school with a homework pass.  Students MUST bring reading or homework with them.

            - If you don’t have it done at the beginning of the period, I will assign you detention.

            - You will call your parent(s) to inform them of your detention.

            - Students who don’t show for detention will be given a referral.

NO NAME?

You will find "no name" papers taped to the fume hood.  If the paper is yours, put your name on it and give it to me.  I will give you the score.  “Hugh R. Yew” papers get recycled every two or so weeks.

THE "TOO BAD RULE"

            - The "Too Bad Rule" is in effect most of the time in this room.  This might

seem a little harsh at first.  Several examples of the "Too Bad Rule" are:

                        1.  Yesterday was the last day to turn in permission slips for a field

trip, and you brought yours today --- too bad.

2.       You lent your science book to your friend, who is absent today, and your

homework is in it.  Either use a homework pass to turn it in tomorrow, or --- too bad.

FIELD TRIPS and EXPECTED ABSENCES and KNOWN “OUT OF CLASS” TIMES

-          If you are going on a field trip, etc., you are expected to find out what you will be missing BEFORE you go (such as at least the day before).  Otherwise it will be too late.

-          Yes, you have to make up what you missed!  I don’t believe in assigning stupid, piddly work – you don’t want to do it, I don’t want to grade it.  All my assignments have important learning value.
