Library Assignment

This assignment is meant to help you review what you have learned in library and to explore areas where you can access information, both within a physical library (at school or the public library) as well as a virtual library (online)

Work quietly and efficiently. A big part of your library grade depends on how well you do this assignment.

Record your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Answer the questions in complete sentences. You do not need to work on the answers in order, but you do need to number them in order and write the answers next to the correct number.

This is not a race! It will take you several weeks to complete. If you finish far ahead of the rest of the class, you will be asked to review your work for accuracy and careful thought.

1. Introduce yourself to one or both of the librarians if they are there. List both of their names.

2.Locate and browse through the biography section. List one title you'd like to read and write down why.

3.Which Dewey Decimal system number has the most titles in our library? (is it the 100's, the 200's, the 300's, the 400's, the 500's, the 600's, the 700's, the 800's or the 900's) Why do you think there are so many titles in that Dewey classification? To do this: go to the shelves in the non-fiction section. Look at the spines in the sections and estimate which section has the most in it.

4. Locate the Reference section. What is the title of a book there that you think you could use? What would you use it for?

5. List two of our magazine titles.

6.Locate an atlas. List the latitude and longitude of Seattle, Washington.

7.Browse through the fiction section. Find an author whose last name starts with the same letter as yours. What is the author's name and the title of one of their books that you would like to read?

8. Go to Destiny. Locate a book that is checked out. (Hint: to do this you will need to go to Destiny and begin looking up books that you know the titles to. Do this until you find one that is checked out) Tell me it's title, author and the date it is due back.

9. On Destiny locate a book about biomes. (Hint: you will need to go to EXPERT KEYWORDS) What is its title, author and call number?

10. Locate the book: Lon Po Po. What is the name of the award it won and what year did it win the award?

11. Locate the book: The Giver. What award did it win and what was the year it won? (hint: the award is usually given the year a book is published...so look for the latest date on the copyright page)

12. Go To KCLS.  Find a book about dogs. Tell me the title and author. Is it in the library or is it checked out? Would this be a book you could read? Why do you think so?

13.Go to http://www.infoplease.com/people.html    Look up someone famous. Write down  3 reasons they are famous. Tell me 3 personal things about them.

14.Take this information and put it in the correct bibliographic format. (hint: you can go to the library link on the Einstein page for a link to bibliography): wolves: friends or enemies?  new york     harper collins    1998     jane kline

15.Go to the Einstein library page. Click on "District Library Resources" and go to the WorldBook Online  Locate the capital of Wyoming  and write it down.
