English Level 5                     Extra Credit

Option 1

There are a variety of sequels coming to the cinemas this spring.  Such films as Shrek the Third, Spider-Man 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean 3 will be showing.  For this assignment you will write an essay comparing and/or contrasting a sequel with a previous film in the series (you could compare Spider-Man 3 with the original, for example.)  For this essay you should compare the films in terms of the literary elements (plot, theme, character, conflict).  Your essay should include:

  • Title
  • Introduction with thesis
  • Three main body paragraphs with topic sentences
  • Conclusion
  • Transitions from one idea to the next

All drafts must be typed, double spaced, and in 12 point font.

Credit: .03 for peer edited rough draft.  .03 for final draft.

Option 2

Instead of writing a compare/contrast essay, instead you can write a persuasive essay on the topic above.   Which is the better film, Spider-Man 1 or Spider-Man 3?  Why?  What about the acting, plot, characters, conflicts, or themes makes one film better than the other?  Persuade your reader as to which movie they should consider as the superior story.  Your essay should include:

  • Title
  • Introduction with thesis
  • Three main body paragraphs with topic sentences (one paragraph refuting an opposing argument)
  • Conclusion
  • Transitions from one idea to the next

All drafts must be typed, double spaced, and in 12 point font.

Credit: .03 for peer edited rough draft.  .03 for final draft.
