Darin Detwiler is a teacher and the Math and Science Department Head at BEST High School in Kirkland, WA, where he is the recipient of a 2003 Toyota TAPESTRY Award for excellence in Science Literacy Education. A member of the teaching staff since September of 2001, he currently holds the positions of District Level Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning TOSA for Math and Science graduation standards, Building Level Instructional Technology Leader, and Building Level Safety Committee Member and Back-up Incident Commander.
Some of Darin’s favorite teaching moments are those in which he learns from his students and those where the students take over and direct their own learning experience.
Darin has been an instructor in Bellevue Community College’s Venture Program since January of 2002, teaching History, Film as Literature, and Science classes. Darin also assisted in transforming the Venture program from a non-credit, continuing education program into the first degree program in America for students challenged with learning, cognitive, and intellectual disabilities.
In Washington, D.C., Darin serves on the USDA's National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection, a position to which he was appointed in 2004. The major role of the Committee is to advise the Secretary of Agriculture on food safety policies that will contribute to USDA's regulatory policy development. As food safety advocates, Darin and his wife worked with or testified before Congress, President Clinton, state legislators, as well as local and national TV and radio shows. Their involvement in efforts to promote safe handling of meat, safety labels on meat, and public education efforts related to the prevention of food-borne illness outbreaks have brought forth national changes in legislation and media awareness.
Darin has written for various newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Alternative Network Journal, the Bellingham Herald, and the National Science Teacher Magazine.
A decorated U.S. Navy veteran, Darin served aboard the USS William H. Bates (SSN-680) - a fast-attack, nuclear powered submarine as a nuclear engine room supervisor during the end of the Cold War era and through the First Gulf War.
Darin is happily married to a wonderful Canadian woman who is also the owner of a successful internet business. They have three awesome sons who are equally talented in many different ways.
