ACCELERATED READER

Accelerated Reader is designed to help motivate students to read.  It is an efficient way for teachers to check that students are understanding what they read.  Most kids love taking the quizzes on the computer after each book they read.

Accelerated Reader is being used by almost every grade at Alcott.  The PTSA generously budgeted additional funds for the library to purchase an additional 500 Accelerated Reader tests during the Spring of 2002.

PROCESS

1.   Students choose a book from the Accelerated Reader list that fits their reading level.

2.  They read their book during silent reading time, at home, at recess, when they are finished with assignments . . .

3.   Students then take a short quiz on the computer.

4.  The student and teacher gets a report which shows how well the student does on the quiz.  Teachers also have access to a variety of other reports which helps them provide direction to improve the student's reading skills.

ACCELERATED READER BOOKS

Each Accelerated Reader book is assigned a reading level and a point value.  The point value is determined by a number of factors such as difficulty, length, etc.

Alcott has about tests for about 1,500 books (that's an increase of about 500 tests from last year).  We have about 1,000 of those books in the library.  Teachers have additional books in their classrooms.  As additional funding becomes available we will add tests and books.

There is a list of Accelerated Reader books in the library.  All Accelerated Reader books in the library also have a label at the top of the spine with the reading level on it.  Most teachers have Accelerated Reader books in their classroom marked also.
