PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
Parenting Perspective
The following poem has always been a favorite of mine since our parenting experience began 13 years ago. It was given to us by a friend whose children were nearing the end of childhood. I’ve printed it a few times before and thought it is a good time to reprint just before summer break.
If I Had My Child to Raise Over Again
by Diane Loomans
If I had my child to raise all over again,
I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.
I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.
I would care to know less and know to care more.
I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.
I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars
I’d do more hugging and less tugging.
I’d see the oak tree in the acorn more often.
I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.
I’d model less about the love of power,
And more about the power of love.
2005/2006 News
New next fall at Thoreau Elementary will be a full- time Quest classroom. The class will be a split class for children in first and second grades, serving students from the Juanita Learning Community (all the elementary schools that feed into Juanita High School). The Quest department of the district would like to establish full time Quest programs in each of the four high school feeder patterns of the district so students are closer to their home schools. We will become the home school for students placed in this program and are excited to welcome them and their families into the Thoreau community next fall.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
There are numerous groups who have brought flyers in to Thoreau advertising their summer programs. Please stop by the table located outside of Thoreau’s main office and check out all the possibilities for summer programs for your children. Also, the Kirkland Boys and Girls Club will be holding weekly summer camp sessions at Thoreau Elementary this year
MEDICATIONS
If your child has medication at school, please stop by the office by Friday, June 16, 12:00pm and pick it up. We are not able to keep the medication over the summer. Any medications not picked up will need to be discarded. Thank you!
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
Please make sure your child has, and keeps, a positive balance in their lunch accounts. Whatever balance your child has at the end of this school year will be automatically held over for next year. If your child is a 6th grader or moving to another school within the district, the account will be automatically transferred to the new school. If your child moves to another school district, the money will be refunded to you.
LIBRARY BOOKS
It’s time to please make sure all library books have been turned back in to the library. If your child has a library book at home, please ask your child to be sure it gets back to the library as soon as possible.
FINES AND REPORT CARDS
If your child owes lunch money, a library book, or a fine from a lost or damaged book, their report card will be held until it’s cleared up. Please help us to close this school year smoothly. Thank you!!!
FREE PRESCHOOL
A free preschool program is offered for children of qualifying families. Please call 425 882-8170 or 425 556-1348 for more information. Please call early, as classes may fill up quickly.
JUNE 14 IS AN EARLY RELEASE DAY
The printed calendar provided by the district has an error on the June page. June 14 will be an early release day. Please cross out the note on that date on the printed calendar that indicates otherwise. The district apologizes for the confusion. Remember that a correct one-page version of the official school calendar for this school year and for the next two years are available on the district web site at http://www.lwsd.org/lwsd/html/schools/school_calendar.asp.

KUDOS
This is a special thank you to the 2005-2006 PTA board of Helen Garcia, Denice Loken, Sarah Wilson,
Brenda Nunn and Valerie Quinn. We accomplished a lot this year. We continued the growth of our PTA and also made some big decisions. It was with your positive attitudes, thoughtfulness, enthusiasm and caring that we were able to do this. You all are
amazing people and I was very lucky to be part of this group for the last year. Knowing the new PTA board members, I am sure you will have the same experience and Thoreau should be proud of not only you, but of all the parent volunteers that make this school a very special place. - Sincerely, Polly Blanchard
LOOKING AHEAD
The incoming PTA board and all the committees have already begun planning for next year. Look forward to the same great after school programs we had this year and a couple more, like Nature connections and jump rope classes. Please check our website (schools.lwsd.org/Thoreau) for updates this summer, and look for a student guide to activities in your child’s first day packet. Also mark your calendar for the information night/ice cream/family BBQ on Friday September 8, 6-8 pm. This will be a great chance to get back in touch with neighbors and friends and sign up for terrific programs at Thoreau. These great programs will fill up quickly!
