Where is the playground located?
The additional playground structures are located west of the existing play structures. The district allowed an area of about 40’x 40’ to be developed. This area can hold about seven new play structures.

What kind of equipment does it include?
Playground structures include: 20’ monorail, Bounce Buttons, Tri-Level Bars, Pike’s Peak Climber, a Store Front Panel; and two Babble On stations. Also included, south of the play structures, is a 5’x 40’ concrete landing area with 3 new 6’ benches.

When was the new playground dedicated?
Fundraising success led to completion of the project in Spring 2006.

Why did we need a new playground?

  • We were able to at least double our play structure capacity with implementation of 7 new play structures that emphasize athleticism by focusing on upper body strength building, balance and improving social skills while having fun.
  • Many families frequent the Thoreau playground after school hours and on weekends for a free place to play safely. The community is very compact and is a walking school, (no buses) so it is easily accessible by foot. Other public park facilities nearby require motorized transportation to access, charge a fee, or are closed in winter.
  • Many community organizations, that Thoreau children participate in, utilize our school campus. Kirkland Parks and Recreation sports leagues; Kirkland Boys and Girls club; Kirkland National Little League, for baseball, soccer, basketball, and summer camp. Girl and Boy scouts of America. And LWSD operates an extended day daycare program at Thoreau.

How did we make this happen?
The cost for the playground is approximately $30,000. Fundraising activities were held to help raise money to pay for the playground. One major fundraising effort was the “Create a Lasting Memory” engraved paver program. We applied in Spring 2005 for a $15,000 matching grant from the King County Youth Sports Facility Grant Program.
