PTA Volunteer Opportunities for 2006-2007

FUNDRAISING
COMMITTEES
Ribbit Run Fun Run October 14: This is our one main fundraiser
with much needed contributions last year totaling around $19,000.00. This is
a fun run that has become a tradition at Thoreau! Students collect money for
laps and earn prizes from their donations. Volunteers are needed before the
event to get info out; day of for lap counting, after for prize distribution and
parties. Free money Boxtops, WaMoola, Cartridges for Kids recycle and
Albertsons Partner Cards are ways we bring in up to $2,000.00 every year!
Volunteers for this committee keep track of these programs and keep our
families motivated to participate. Grants There are several money grants available for programs like
we have at our school. A volunteer would help us apply for these grants. FAMILY EVENT COMMITTEES Ice Cream Social and Info Night Friday, Sept. 9: Come join the fun with ice cream, face
painting, and balloon artistry, while gathering information about the cool
programs Thoreau has to offer. Volunteers needed to help scoop ice cream. Fall Dance November 4: A dance DJ comes in the week before the dance
and teaches the kids fun dances during PE. Then we all get together to
boogie. This Fall it will be Friday, Nov. 4th. Volunteers are needed to think
of a theme, be door monitors, and sell refreshments. Holiday Fair December 2: “Make and take” style tables for the kids to
collect inexpensive holiday gifts and also tables with direct sale companies
for adults. Volunteers needed to set up and help at tables. Friday, December
2nd. Valentines Breakfast February 14: Invite a special guest to this popular event.
This year will be Tuesday, Feb. 14th from 7:00 to 8:30am. Volunteers are needed to help with set up,
serving, and clean up. Bingo Night Friday, March 3rd will be family bingo night. Volunteers
needed to sell tickets as well as procure and hand out prizes. Staff Appreciation May 1 – 5: Parents honor the teachers and staff at Thoreau
by giving them a themed gift each day. Volunteers are needed to organize and
hand out these gifts this week. Carnival June 9: One of the most fun events in the Spring!
Volunteers are mostly needed during the event to help with activities. STUDENT ENRICHMENT PROGRAM COMMITTEES
Bank Day This program, sponsored by Washington Mutual Bank, helps
children learn how to manage money by setting up their own bank account.
Volunteers are needed for lunchtime on a specific day of the week to collect
the children’s deposits throughout the year. Assemblies During September: Coordinates with Principal
R. the fabulous assemblies that the students get to enjoy through out the
year. Book Adventure Program This reading incentive program designed to enhance our
reading program at Thoreau runs January to June. Volunteers work with the
teacher team leader on this and facilitate the program. Book Rodeo January 20: Students really like this book exchange
program where they bring in their used book. Volunteers needed after school
for a few days before event and during one day in Jan. Reflections Program Annual theme-based program put on by the State PTA where
students express their artistic abilities through song, poetry, story
writing, painting or other means of expression. Last year 133 students
participated in this program with several students moved on to the next level
of evaluation. Volunteers are needed to help organize the entries and help
with the reception Friday December 9th. PTA after school programs: Study club, Art classes,
and Honor choir Volunteers work with the teachers of these programs to
handle registration, and support them as needed. Art Docent This is a L.W.S.D structured art program where teachers
will include a progressing art lesson once a month to their class. Parents
are needed to help the teacher during this monthly lesson. (Gather supplies,
clean up). Room Parent Ideally each classroom has a room parent to support the teacher
and classroom. Each teacher utilizes this person differently. Mostly
facilitating holiday class parties, helping with field trips and other
support as needed. Library Assistant Once a week, for about an hour, set up a time with the
librarian to help re-shelf books. She also needs help with the Scholastic
Book Fair, which runs in the Fall and Spring. 6th grade yearbook A 6th grade parent sets up to organize a yearbook for the
students to have as a memory at the end of year. Also coordinates the 6th
grade end-of- year party. School Pictures Individual pictures are taken in the Fall, and classroom
pictures are taken in the Spring. Volunteers help the photographers on the
day of the pictures. Top Frog A.C.E Award
Every month a student from each class is chosen by the
teacher to receive this award. The student earns this from their Academic,
Citizenship, and overall Efforts. A volunteer organizes the certificate,
button or ribbon for the monthly recipients of this award and helps with the
lunchtime celebrations. COMMUNICATION COMMITTEES
Ribbet Review Monthly newsletter about our school.
Volunteers needed to research information, print and distribute. Legislative Representative Keeps current on Legislative news for our district and
school. Communicates with the Newsletter chair to publish this information. Bulletin Board Creates and updates the bulletin boards in the Lobby area
of the school. Directory Student directory with names,
numbers and email addresses given out to all students. Volunteers gather
information and copy into a handbook. Website Update the website on a weekly basis throughout the year. Photographer Volunteer needed to be responsible for taking (digital or
scanned) photos at school events to be posted on website and possibly in
newsletters. SAFETY COMMITTEES Emergency Prep PTA enhances the district
emergency plan with a resource notebook of the parents and by providing a
comfort item and food in case of a unfortunate event where students would
have a extended stay at school. Volunteers are needed at the beginning of the
year to gather items and organize this. Safety Patrol 5th and 6th grade students participate in the program.
A parent of these students steps up to support the teacher facilitating this
program. PTA budgets money for this and the volunteer would buy candy after
Halloween for treats for the students, to have through out the year; Plan a
mid year pizza luncheon; And work with her to set up the end of the year
party. Last year they went to Pump It Up in Kirkland. Telephone Tree In case of an emergency closure at school, you would be
contacted with information to pass on to your class. In the Fall the Chairperson
of this committee receives the information from the school secretary and
organizes it and distributes it to the volunteers from each class. Safe Arrival Parents needed each day of the week to come to the school
office at 8:45am to call parents of children who are marked absent and have
not alerted the school. Sally Freni organizes the volunteers; this is shared
with other volunteers. Vision and Hearing Volunteers are needed for one day to help with screening to
test vision and hearing for students. No prior experience is necessary, as
training will be provided. Chairperson works with the district on scheduling
this, usually sometime at the end of January. PTA SPECIFIC
COMMITTEES Golden Acorn At the Volunteer Tea at the end of the year, a person or
persons are selected to receive this award. It recognizes continued and
dedicated volunteer support of children at our school and in our community.
Past recipients usually help with the nomination information of this award. Nominating Committee During January: This committee solicits members to run for
the PTA Board for the upcoming year. Hospitality Volunteers bring treats to our PTA general meetings to
share. PTA Membership Sets up booth at information night and promotional
materials for encouraging PTA membership. Audit At least once a year a parent works with the Treasurer to
