PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Movement… Students experienced dance/movement
lessons this week during music classes. Debbie Gilbert, the instructor, has
worked for many years to teach dance concepts and skills to children in the
Puget Sound area. Our new Art Work Team, chaired by Mr. Turner, was able to bring
Debbie Gilbert to us through grant money. ArtsEd of Washington is working
with several schools in the area to promote the arts in elementary schools.
Thoreau staff members themselves experienced the same lessons the students
did on Wednesday afternoon. There is ample scientific evidence that movement,
as well as all the art disciplines, enhances learning in all content areas.
Teachers learned different techniques to incorporate movement into
instructional practices. We are fortunate to have Debbie Gilbert scheduled to
work directly in classrooms for 4 more days after the Thanksgiving break. Choice Schools Please make
sure you read the back side of this Thoreau News under “Choice Schools”. Now
is the time to attend informational meetings if you are interested in any of
the district’s choice schools for your child for the 2005-2006 school year. If
you wait until the spring time, it will be too late, as they will have long
waiting lists. HIV/AIDS
CURRICULUM PARENT INFO. NIGHT Mark your calendars: The HIV/AIDS Parent Information night is
scheduled for Tuesday, January 17, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm in the Board Room of
the Lake Washington School District Resource Center. The purpose of this
meeting is to provide parents with an overview of the HIV/AIDS district
curriculum and the lessons that are used with 5th through 12th
grade students. FREE
DENTAL SEALANT DAY! The Lake Wash. Dental Hygienists’
Society is offering a preventive dental program, Saturday, February 4, 2006,
from 9am to 4pm. They provide dental sealants, exams, bitewing x-rays, and
fluoride varnish Free of charge to children who would not otherwise be
able to receive a cavity prevention treatment. Children whose teeth are
unable to be sealed due to decay will have their cavities filled at a later
date, Free of charge. Sealants are white coatings that are applied to the
chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are non-toxic and protect the teeth
from cavities. This process is painless, can protect you child’s teeth for
6-8 years and is usually done in less than one hour. Registered dental
hygienists from the state of Washington will place the sealants on your
child’s teeth. Space is limited. Call the dental clinic at Lake Wash.
Technical College, 425 739-8130, as soon as possible to make an appointment.
Their hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm, Mondays through Fridays. SACK
LUNCHES AVAILABLE Sack lunches will be available to
purchase before dismissal on the four early dismissal days before the
Thanksgiving Day holiday. LUNCH
ACCOUNTS The School Messenger notification
system started making negative balance phone calls to parents of Thoreau
students Wednesday, November 16. This should eliminate the need for negative
balance envelopes to be printed and sent home from school. The calls will be
made Monday through Thursday evenings. The call message says the following: “This
is the food service department at Thoreau Elementary calling to inform you
that your student, [student name inserted], has a current outstanding balance
of negative [amount inserted]. Please note, it takes 1 day to update our
records. Please disregard this message if payment has already been sent. If
payment is still needed send a check or cash with your child to school, or
make arrangements for a credit card payment by calling the central office at
425-702-3393. Thank you!” Please help us by keeping a positive
balance in your child’s account. Your comments and feedback as to how
the system is working at your school would be very welcome. You may call the
number above or your school, 425 823-4350. SCHOLASTIC

website for the latest information! Thank you to Principal R for the
really fun idea and challenge of being “slimed” if our school reached our
fundraising goal. The kids and adults alike really enjoyed the event. For
more photos, Sarah has posted on the website. FALL
