PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Recycling at Thoreau Elementary

Our lunch room routines changed this week, due to the great work of our 3rd and 5th grade staff, our lunchroom staff, and students! Working with King County and Sodexo Food Services, Thoreau students now recycle food and packaging waste in our cafeteria. This is in addition to classroom recycling that is already in place. No longer does lunch debris just get thrown away. Now, milk cartons, paper, and plastic packaging goes into one recycling container, food waste in another and then the tray is scraped and stacked. So far the kids are doing a great job.

In early December, we are planning to start using plastic lunch trays, which will then be washed and reused on a daily basis. This will then stop our use of Styrofoam trays and further decrease lunch waste at Thoreau.

Safety Concerns at 84th Ave and 138th Street

Our crossing guards at the crosswalk of 84th and NE138th Street have had several near misses recently. These incidences have occurred when drivers are turning left onto 84th from NE138th. Please do not begin your turn until the crossing guard is safely on the sidewalk. Cars are beginning to turn while the crossing guard is still in the crosswalk, often entering into the guards “blindspot”.

Choice Schools

Please make sure you read the back side of this Thoreau News under “Choice Schools”. Now is the time to attend informational meetings if you are interested in any of the district’s choice schools for your child for the 2005-2006 school year. If you wait until the spring time, it will be too late, as they will have long waiting lists.

The Sixth grade students and teachers extend a big “THANK YOU” to the Thoreau community for your support of our Outdoor Education Program and its fund-raising necessity.  Once again, you have helped out by generously supporting our income raising efforts through your purchases of the Elliott Bay products and Dough To Go Cookie’s book.  The Elliott Bay merchandise will be delivered to you prior to Thanksgiving and the cookies should be in your hands very soon.  The latter was delivered to the 6th grade students on Tuesday, November 1.  If you are not receiving your order, please call Mr. Elsworth or Mr. Snider, at 425-823-4350 to get the ball rolling.  Thank you again, for your understanding, encouragement, and support! - Mr. Elsworth and Mr. Snider

FREE DENTAL SEALANT DAY!

The Lake Wash. Dental Hygienists’ Society is offering a preventive dental program, Saturday, February 4, 2006, from 9am to 4pm. They provide dental sealants, exams, bitewing x-rays, and fluoride varnish Free of charge to children who would not otherwise be able to receive a cavity prevention treatment. Children whose teeth are unable to be sealed due to decay will have their cavities filled at a later date, Free of charge. Sealants are white coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. They are non-toxic and protect the teeth from cavities. This process is painless, can protect you child’s teeth for 6-8 years and is usually done in less than one hour. Registered dental hygienists from the state of Washington will place the sealants on your child’s teeth. Space is limited. Call the dental clinic at Lake Wash. Technical College, 425 739-8130, as soon as possible to make an appointment. Their hours are 9:00am to 4:00pm, Mondays through Fridays.
