PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Important Policy and Handbook Information

Our updated Thoreau Handbook is finally back from the printers and was distributed today to the “youngest or only” students in each classroom. The handbook is loaded with great school and district information. Please keep it handy.

Our school Discipline Policy was also delivered this week from the printers. A copy was provided to each student. The Discipline Policy explains Thoreau beliefs around discipline, describes the discipline process and gives examples of the discipline forms used. Please review this policy with your student (s).

Note: Please take time to read over the booklet carefully with your child. The last page of the Discipline Policy asks families to sign and return it to school. The intent was to make this an easy thing to do, but the way in which the policy was bound makes this a little difficult. It would be best to use a pair of scissors to cut this page from the policy and then return it to your child’s teacher.

Choice Schools

Please make sure you read the back side of this Thoreau News under “Choice Schools”. Now is the time to attend informational meetings if you are interested in any of the district’s choice schools for your child for the 2005-2006 school year. If you wait until the spring time, it will be too late, as they will have long waiting lists.

Safety Alert

Twice this past week unprovoked assaults were instigated against Thoreau students by older teenage boys while walking home after school. If your student walks home, please be sure he or she is walking with a buddy and know of safe houses they can go to if they feel unsafe. The police and junior high administrators are involved with the investigations. Fortunately, the injuries incurred by our Thoreau students were minor.

HIV/AIDS CURRICULUM PARENT INFO. NIGHT

Mark your calendars: The HIV/AIDS Parent Information night is scheduled for Tuesday, January 17, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm in the Board Room of the Lake Washington School District Resource Center. The purpose of this meeting is to provide parents with an overview of the HIV/AIDS district curriculum and the lessons that are used with 5th through 12th grade students.

KUDOS

As an incentive to join PTA by October 15 we did a drawing this year at our 1st general membership meeting. The five winners were Ms. Vunak, Moonja Lum, Caroline Tippets, Laura Thompson, and Cari Sayler. They won a 20 or 25 dollar gift card to Starbucks, Fred Meyer, Target, Linens and Things, or Barnes and Noble! Congratulations and thanks for joining PTA and supporting our children!

Thank you to the many parents that came to cheer on our students during the Ribbet Run! The kids had a great time and were bursting to tell everyone how many laps they ran! If you have participated in the fundraising aspect of this, “Thank You” for making your child’s efforts worth while!!! Special thank you to Caroline Reilly, Angie Wooden, Tammie Kelly, Pauline Fiechtner, Linda Larson, Margaret Adams, Denice Loken, Michelle Kent, Laura Doerflinger, and Sean and Jennifer Wellander. Thank you to the many lap counters, you know who you are, and we could not have done it with out you!!!

Thank you to our devoted money counters: Margaret Adams, Brenda Nunn, Michelle Kent, Pauline Fiechtner, Natalie Young, Shelly Balice, Jo Jo Bisset, Amy Cole, Barbara Stommel, Nicole, and Polly Blanchard. Your commitment was awesome! You make a difference!!

IT WILL BE SLIME TIME FOR PRINCIPAL ROETCISOENDER! HOORAY!!

Together we did it!! $20,428.43 is our total for the Ribbet Run fundraiser! Look for the notice on when the “slime” assembly will take place…date to be determined, but very soon!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU!!

Can you believe in the last week we brought in over $7,500.00…to bring our school total to 20,428.43! Hooray! To all the kids, families and employers that made an outstanding effort to make this happen for our school. You should be very proud of yourself! This was an 85% fundraiser for our school (15% goes to prizes). 85% will get spent on enhancement of our Reading Program (Book Adventure), busses for field trips, math and science money (like science kits), art programs (art docent, Art Beautification, Artist in Residence), $6 per student for teacher’s to use in the classroom, PE and Recess toy purchase, Library money, Support of our Special education program, Assemblies, additional support of our after school programs, and more….. And we are so excited we went over our goal so we can take that money and put it towards our additional playground equipment….more to come about this soon!!

CLASSROOMS THAT REACHED THEIR GOAL!

You did it!! Mrs. Mach, Mrs. Ruby AM & PM, Ms. Platzke, Mrs. Amundsen, Mrs. Guthrie, Ms. Hartford, Mr. Turner, Mrs. Vunak, Mr. Turnbull, and Ms. Holman: Your classes will receive an extra recess with ice cream! And the teachers will get a special treat also….Yeah!

CAMPBELL SOUP LABELS

Yes we will take soup labels…please separate from the box tops! These are not part of the contest, but do add up. Each label is really only worth a penny and we have to buy out of their catalog. So not as fluent as the General Mills Box Tops, but just the same we will collect.

WESTERN STYLE FALL DANCE- NOV. 4, 7-9:00PM

We are very excited to have Gaylen Sauve back again this year! This is a free (PTA pays) event that the kids and families really enjoy!! Gaylen comes the week of the dance and teaches the kids dances in their PE and music classes. Then we all get together to boogie at this, somewhat structured, event…This year we would like to request that families bring a non-perishable food item to the dance. We will collect and donate to Hope Link in Bothell. The 6th graders will have sno-cones and popcorn for sale. There will be a picture booth and some free western style goodies to give away at the door! CHILDREN MUST COME WITH AN ADULT!!!

2005-2006 THOREAU SPIRIT SHIRTS ARE COMING!

The new Thoreau spirit shirts are on the way! We have a wonderful new design created for us by our very own Margaret Adams. This design features three frogs in a Thoreau sailboat with the caption “Life is a journey, not a destination”. The shirts will be navy blue and will be available in 100% cotton short sleeves, as well as crewneck and hooded sweatshirts. Look for the flyer and order form coming home with your student(s) today!
