PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Coin Drive Update

Students have been very generous in bringing in coins for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. PTA volunteers will begin counting today. I have decided to extend the coin drive for another week, as this will give more time for those who still wish to contribute. Mrs. Amundsen and I are working with a 2nd grade teacher named Ms. Annette Fuhr. She teaches at Jean Gordon Elementary School, located in the New Orleans area. Plans are underway to have our students write letters to students at this school as well. It is unclear when the school itself will be able to reopen. It is our intention that the monies we donate will be used to buy school supplies for students.

I wanted to take some space in this edition of the Frog News to review some important policies here at Thoreau. Our Thoreau Handbook is at the printers and should be available for distribution in the next week or two. In it are the all of the school and district policies we follow during the school year.

Bike Policy

Riding bikes to school is a privilege for our 3rd through 6th grade students. In order to ride a bike to school, students must complete a bike form. These are available in the office. The form lists the rules to follow and asks for both a student signature and a parent signature. Students must walk bikes when on campus, wear helmets, and use a bike lock.

Dog Policy

The Lake Washington School District has a “no dog” policy for all campuses in the district (excluding seeing eye dogs). We do have students at Thoreau with severe canine phobias.

Pets as Show and Tell

Prior permission from the teacher is required before a student brings a favorite pet for show and tell. Each teacher is made aware of allergies and special situations of the students in his or her classroom. If permission is granted, the pet should be brought to school by a parent, “shown” and then taken home.

Safe Arrival

If your child is going to be late or absent, PLEASE call either the Safe Arrival Recorder, 425 823-1504 or the office, 425 823-4350 and leave your name, your child’s name, the date, whether your child will be late or absent and the reason for being late or absent.

Next week I’ll highlight a few more policies regarding pick up and drop off procedures.

Business advertisements in the directory was a success last year and we are happy to offer this again. It is $35.00 for a business card sized ad. This cost is tax deductible and the money will help support student enrichment programs. Please contact Shelly at shellybalice@verizon.net, or call her at #823-3839 if you might be interested in placing an ad.

JOIN PTA

Join PTA by October 14 and your name will be entered to win one of 5 prizes. Drawing will be held on Oct. 20 at the first General Meeting. (You do not have to be present to win.) Schedule Changes – Emergencies & Inclement Weather

The Lake Washington School District has contracted with SchoolReport.org to provide up-to-the-minute school schedule changes due to adverse weather conditions and other emergency situations. This is just one more way you can get instant information about schedule changes in addition to our current methods (radio and television). In order to access this information, simply log on to their website. If you prefer, you can enter your email address for an individual account (free) and customize the site to show only LWSD schedule information. Or, if you have students attending other schools that participate, you can include those schools there as well.  You can also sign up to receive instant email alerts (or have it sent to your pager) when there has been a scheduling change due to inclement weather or emergency situations. You may also unsubscribe at any time. Make use of this great new feature! A link is available on the Thoreau website home page: http://schools.lwsd.org/thoreau.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

The Ice Cream Social is in the Thoreau gym tonight, 6:30pm-8:30pm.  Come enjoy a bowl of ice cream, sign up for before and after school programs, get your face painted and have fun visiting with classmates! And don't forget to stop by the chess table to enter the drawing to win a Star Wars chess set! This is a family event. Children must be accompanied by a parent. Hope to see you there!

It’s a new year and we are looking for parents to be art docents!

I know many of you are closet artists and would love to help in your child’s classroom.  There is a curriculum that Thoreau is using from the district, so things are set up.  We will also meet and talk as a group and share things we learned last year and note any changes we want to make this year.

If you are interested in being a docent, please let your child’s teacher know or email me at slg.morris2@verizon.net  -Suzanne Morris
