PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Yahoo!!!

The 2005-2006 school year is off and running. As we have begun classes this year, your patience has been greatly appreciated as we work to finalize class lists and adjust to a new schedule. It is truly delightful to see the faces of our students as they meet new teachers and make new friends. On behalf of the staff I’d like to welcome all of our new families to the Thoreau Community and welcome back our returning families. Be sure to read through the first day packets and see how you can become involved at school.

Curriculum Nights will be held in September. Look under the calendar section of the Frog News to find out which nights and at what time. This is a great way to find out what your student will be learning throughout the year.

We look forward to a fantastic year!

New Daily Schedule

Thoreau Elementary will start at 9:00am and end at 3:30pm. for the upcoming school year. The first bell will sound at 8:55am.

LUNCH MONEY

It is greatly appreciated when you are able to have lunch money in your child’s lunch account. Please do not let their account have a minus balance. It takes a lot of your child’s time and staff time to catch up once an account hits a minus balance. Thank you for your help!

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

Please come to the Ice Cream Social Friday, Sept. 9, 6:30pm-8:30pm in the gym. It’s free! In additional to ice cream we will have a balloon artist, two face painters, plus tables with information and the opportunity to sign up for our many wonderful after school programs! You can also enter the drawing to win a Star Wars chess set! Volunteers are needed to help scoop ice cream and clean up. If you would like to help or have questions please call Denice Loken, 425 814-9726. Hope to see you there!

Schedule Changes – Emergencies & Inclement Weather

The Lake Washington School District has contracted with SchoolReport.org to provide up-to-the-minute school schedule changes due to adverse weather conditions and other emergency situations. This is just one more way you can get instant information about schedule changes in addition to our current methods (radio and television). In order to access this information, simply log on to their website. If you prefer, you can enter your email address for an individual account (free) and customize the site to show only LWSD schedule information. Or, if you have students attending other schools that participate, you can include those schools there as well.  You can also sign up to receive instant email alerts (or have it sent to your pager) when there has been a scheduling change due to inclement weather or emergency situations. You may also unsubscribe at any time. Make use of this great new feature! A link is available on the Thoreau website home page: http://schools.lwsd.org/thoreau.

ART CLASSES

The popular after school art with Mrs. Freese is back! Yeah!. She has many great programs for the year! Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 2-3:30 pm. There are 4 different art classes and 2 clay art classes offered throughout the year. These classes will run almost every Wednesday of the year and are offered for grades 1-6th. The first class is called “basic art” and it runs Oct. 5 until Nov. 9 (6 classes) The cost is $20.00. Min. enrollment needs to be 10 students and max. enrollment will be 15 students. HONOR CHOIR

Mrs. Paige is ready for another year of fun with the Honor Choir! Any student who loves to sing and is in grades 4, 5, or 6 may join. They meet in the music room on Mon. and Thurs. from 3:30 to 4:15. Honor Choir runs from Oct. 3 until June, with many cool performances. Last year they even sang the National anthem at a Sonics and Storm basketball game!! Please contact Helen Garcia at helen@planetgarcia.com or 821-4442 to register.

WEBSITE

Check out our Website!! Schools.lwsd.org/Thoreau. It has everything you need to know about Thoreau on it!! Thanks to Sarah Wilson (used to be Cuplin…congrats to her and Joel!) we have the most awesome website! She works with enthusiasm and has a real knack for this technology and we feel very lucky to have her continued efforts with this!

DIRECTORY

Look for the directory form in the 1st day packet and fill out right away!  This information needs to be turned in by Sept. 20 if you want to be included in the directory. This is a very useful booklet provided by the PTA and available to all students at Thoreau.

Business advertisements in the directory were a success last year and we are happy to offer this again. It is $35.00 for a business card sized ad. This is tax deductible and the money will support student enrichment programs. Please contact Shelly at shellybalice@verizon.net, or call her at #823-3839 if interested.

It’s a new year and we are looking for parents to be art docents!

I know many of you are closet artists and would love to help in your child’s classroom.  There is a curriculum that Thoreau is using from the district, so things are set up.  We will also meet and talk as a group and share things we learned last year and note any changes we want to make this year.

If you are interested in being a docent, please let your child’s teacher know or email me at slg.morris2@verizon.net  -Suzanne Morris
