Curriculum Night for
Intermediate Grades, 7pm 22
Curriculum Night for Primary Grades, 7pm 29 Curriculum Night for Kindergarten, 7pm PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE A New Food Group Tonight, at the dinner
table, read something aloud to your family. Tomorrow night, let
another member read something: A news story An inspirational verse A poem A cereal box panel A joke book, a sports
article History, humor Anything. Each night a different
family member, a different selection. Just imagine the range of
subjects your family will read in 365 days. What a stimulating way to have
your children develop good reading habits! We have 23 million
illiterate adults in America. We wouldn’t have one, if each of them had been
served reading as apart of their nightly diet. It’s non fattening, but
enriching and it doesn’t cost a dime. Thanks Weeders! As many have noticed, the
weeds have enjoyed a good season. With our district facilities crews spread
so thin, it has been impossible to keep up with the long growing season this
spring. To those parents who have helped pull weeds in our front beds, THANK YOU!
This quiet form of volunteerism truly helps all of Thoreau by keeping us
looking good. I know Julie Sogge and Trudy Swain, along with their children deserve
a word of thanks. If there are others that I
don’t know about, please let me know so that I can recognize your
efforts as well. We appreciate all of you! Go Confidently… Thanks to Monica Ewert,
our lobby area is in the process of enrichment. The famous quote by Thoreau,
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams” will serve as an
inspirational motivator as our students leave by the front door. This idea
came out of the work from the Art Beautification Committee (ABC). The ABC
will be meeting again in September and is open to all. Look for information
in the Frog News next September. 2005 –
2006 NEWS!!!!! Due to the new calendar, the district has had to
adjust the start and end times of many of the schools in the district. Thoreau Elementary will start at 9:00
a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. for the upcoming school year. The first bell
will sound at 8:55 a.m. This new start and end time will be published in
future communications. EVERY WEDNESDAY next year, the start time will be 9:00 a.m. and the end time will be 2:00 p.m. The early release
days will be utilized by staff for teaming and professional development
purposes. King County Library Summer Reading Program The KCLS Summer Reading 2005 program theme is: Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds. Please visit your community library to sign up or there is also online registration at www.kcls.org. At the library you can pick up your summer reading booklet to keep track of the minutes your child reads or is read to. The more you read, the more fun prizes you can earn! You can earn up to 3 prizes: one after 300 min.(5hrs), another after 600 min.(10hrs), and a final prize after 900 min.(15hrs). Each library will have a Prize Chart posted. So, head to your local library or check out the KCLS website for more details, great reading lists, and more! Also, look for more information coming home with your child after our summer reading assembly, Thursday June 16. Have fun and Happy Reading! |

LUNCH MONEY? LIBRARY BOOKS? Please, we need your help! If you owe lunch money, please send in
money to bring your balance to a positive amount. The cost of a lunch is
$2.00. Please plan to have enough money to cover the rest of the school days
if your child buys lunch every day. Any left over money will carry over to
next year’s lunch account. All library books and materials are due back to
the library no later than June 14. LOST AND FOUND ITEMS All unclaimed Lost and Found Items will
be donated to a charity organization June 22. SUMMER FLYERS Be sure to stop by the
Information Table located just outside Thoreau’s Main Office. Many
organizations have brought in flyers advertising summer activities and camps
for children. Due to the mass number we receive, we no longer send them home
in backpacks.

Check out our
website for the latest information! We have sold about 70 tiles so far! We will continue
to sell them through the summer and next year until the tiling is installed
next Spring. The price for a 6x6 tile is $50.00, a 12x12 tile is
$250.00 (this can be personal or a corporate logo), and a commemorative bench
is $500.00. Please share this with your relatives, employer, and other
connections you may have that would be interested! Also several parents
have purchased one tile and then used the matching grant program with their
employer to purchase a second tile. This is easy; just get the form
from your resource center and turn in with a tile form. We have room
for about 400 tiles…. Together we can do it! Questions? Valerie Quinn at
398-7939 or Polly Blanchard at 820-8909. The students have had a great time with the
various art projects from the new curriculum. It’s been very fun working with a variety of mediums –
watercolor, wire sculpture, oil pastels, tempera, printmaking, etc. The
curriculum is designed to introduce the students to art concepts, using
various mediums and having fun. They
don’t always come home with a finished looking project because that is not
the aim of the curriculum. We have had several dedicated parents who have
been docents this year. To them we
say a big “THANK YOU!” They are Cynthia MacDuff, Lucy Robles,
Silviann Johnson, Linda Thompson, Regina Bock, Nancy Biery, Laura
Doerflinger, Tony Bock, Margaret Adams, Julie Sogge, Jami McVicker, Laura,
Bernard, Grace Kane, Dianna Pierro and Suzanne Morris. So… what does an art
docent do? Some of them prepare
materials, set up, help kids with the lesson and clean up. Others add information along with the
teacher as the teacher does the lessons and a dedicated few
teach the lessons while the teacher is there to help. It takes about 2-4 hours a month average. We
are looking for more docents for next year.
If you like art, but don’t know a lot about it, you can still help
with preparation and clean up. If you really want to teach, there are
teachers that want that, too. Mostly, I think that art and developing the
right brain (for most people) is so important. Studies have
shown that when art is incorporated into learning that students learn faster
and better. I’m also looking for a co-chair for next year, so please
let me know if you are interested! Suzanne Morris slg.morris2@verizon.net 821-3505

The number is all you need! THANK

popsicles for our Frog Day. Please take a moment when shopping there to tell
them Thoreau appreciates the support! GOLDEN

Helen Garcia, and Marie Hartford! If you know any of these ladies, it is
obvious why they were chosen - their efforts to make Thoreau a great place
for our students to excel is endless! Congratulations and Thank You!!!!! The Thoreau staff joins together to wish you and your families a fun and safe summer vacation! To our 6th graders, “It’s been fun! We wish you the Best in your continuing education!” To the rest of our students, we look forward to seeing you the end of August!” |
