PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

THE ALL AMERICAN VOLUNTEER
Listen my children, and you shall hear
a story of the All American Volunteer.
It all began back many a year
with the midnight ride of Paul Revere.
Volunteer soldiers, and many, many more,
built America from shore to shore.
Why is America such a wonderful place?
Because volunteers are the base!
Volunteers share their talents and time,
for their efforts they ask not a dime!
They serve their cities, county, or state.
The value of their services are hard to rate.
When called to duty, their response is quick.
They rock cradles, serve hungry, and heal our sick.
To try to set measure would be a waste.
There is no dollar value that can be placed.
Why do so many people serve as volunteers?
There are so many reasons, some bring us to tears.
For whatever their reasons for serving may be,
Volunteers are the answer and always will be.
There isn't enough money to pay for what they do
Just remember to say "Thanks" when they come to help you!

by Mona Ray

Paul Revere earned his living as a silversmith.   But what do we remember him for?  His volunteer work.  Volunteer work is done above and beyond earning a living and deals with what people really care passionately about.  Susan J. Ellis

Next Thursday, Thoreau staff members would like to thank our volunteers. We are very blessed to have many, many volunteers assist us in all aspects of the school day. Please come and enjoy our volunteer tea on June 9th at 3:30pm. Child care provided.

WOW!

Our lobby received two new hand made benches today, compliments of Jiri Zapletal. The benches are constructed from cherry and maple and reflect Jiri’s unique natural style of woodworking. The benches compliment the architecture of the building in a wonderful way. Please enjoy the benches on your next visit to the school. THANK YOU JIRI for your generous contributions to Thoreau Elementary!!!

LUNCH MONEY? LIBRARY BOOKS?

If you owe lunch money, please send in money to bring your balance to a positive amount. The cost of a lunch is $2.00. Please plan to have enough money to cover the rest of the school days if your child buys lunch every day. Any left over money will carry over to next year’s lunch account. All library books and materials are due back to the library no later than June 14. Thanks for your help with these two important programs!

SAFETY PATROL PARTY... PARENTS NEEDED!

It is time for the 2004-2005 safety patrol to have their end of the year party! Mrs. Vunak needs at least one parent chaperone on the bus to Pump It Up, in Kirkland, and two parents to help serve Root Beer floats at school when they come back. The party is Thursday, June 9, from 11am to 2:30pm. Please let her know if you can help out! jvunak@lwsd.org or 823-4350.

CREATE A LASTING MEMORY

We have sold 70 tiles so far! It is sooo cool to see the paper tiles go up across from the gym. The children are going to love seeing their names on these tiles for years to come! The "early bird special" of $45.00 for a 6x6 tile ends June 1st. After that it will be $50.00.

Please share this with grandparents, employers, and other connections you may have that might be interested.  This is a 70% profit for us, and creates a lasting memory! Questions, contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard 425 820-8909.

PLAYGROUND

Thank you to all the families supporting our additional playground adventure! We have about $5,570.00 in our playground fund so far. We have applied for the $15,000.00 King County grant and will know in November the results. We can do it if we all work together! Any comments, please contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard at 425 820-8909.

KUDOS

Thank you to Mrs. Paige (our music teacher) for her endurance and energy with the after school Honor Choir program. She not only teaches this after school program two days a week, but also directs the 3rd and 6th grade plays. She gives her heart to these programs for the love of music and children! When you see her, make sure and thank her for all her efforts.

SUMMER FLYERS

Be sure to stop by the Information Table located just outside Thoreau’s Main Office. Many organizations have brought in flyers advertising summer activities and camps for children. Due to the mass number we receive, we no longer send them home in backpacks.
