May 6, 2005 May 6 11:45am Early Dismissal-Teacher Workshop 12 6th Grade Musical 7:00pm 20 Carnival 6:00pm-9:00pm 24-26 6th grade Outdoor Ed 27 No School-Professional Teacher Day 30 No School-Memorial Day PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Colorful Kindergarten On Thursday of this week, our kindergarten students put handprints on the wall…without any consequences. The first project of the ABC (Art Beautification Committee) has begun. The hallway used by kindergarten students to access various parts of the building will be decorated with colorful handprint flowers. There is enough wall space for many years to come for future kindergarten handprints to be made. The plan is to have incoming kindergarten students add their own handprints upon entering kindergarten every fall, symbolically welcoming them into the Thoreau student community. Our thanks to Kim Jones, project coordinator, and all her helpers! If you would like to be a part of decorating Thoreau Elementary, please join us at our next ABC meeting (date to be determined). Announcements will be made in the Frog News. 2005-2006 It is hard to believe, but
it is time to begin the process for creating classes for next year. The process
we use at Thoreau starts in May and will finish in late August when lists are
posted just before school begins again. Starting May 9, parent input forms
will be available. Input forms are optional. These forms give parents an
opportunity to give us important information to consider during the placement
process. The forms are available in the office. Mrs. Freni will have them at
her desk. All forms need to be completed and returned to the office by May
26. In early June, I will be meeting with grade levels to create initial
classes for next year, taking into consideration parent input forms, gender
balance, academic needs and behavior concerns. In early August, these lists
are reviewed again by grade levels. Changes do occur due to enrollment
changes over the summer. Final review of class lists occurs the last week in
August. LAKE
WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT 2005
ELEMENTARY SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION Elementary

Washington School District home page www.lwsd.org.

office 425-828-3291 or email kmatson@lwsd.org. NURSES CORNER 5th Grade parents, a reminder that your
child needs a second MMR to enter 6th grade. As soon as your child receives this
immunization, please call Sally or Geri, 425 823-4350, and give them the date
so it can be added to your child’s records. The district mandates that your
child not be placed on a class list until we have a date showing he/she is in
compliance with state required immunizations. |

Check out our
website for the latest information! ASSEMBLY Thanks to parents supporting our PTA
fundraisers, we budget about $2,500.00 each year to bring enrichment
assemblies to all students at Thoreau. We have had Pioneer Farms, Museum of
Flight, and the Early Music Guild so far this year. Our last series of
assemblies is with the Pacific Science Center. They will be coming to our
school Wednesday, May 11, and Thursday, May 12. The primary grades have
individual classroom storybook science and the intermediate grades get to
check out the Starlab Planetarium shows in the gym. KUDOS Thank you to everyone for the parent
support (snacks, etc.) for the children during the WASL! Thank you to all the families supporting our additional
playground adventure! We have about $1,945.00 in our playground fund so
far. We will allocate the Carnival profits into this account also.
We have applied for the $15,000.00 King County grant and will know in
November the results. We can do it if we all work together! Any comments,
please contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard at 425 820-8909. We have sold 26 tiles so far!
It is sooo cool to see the paper tiles go up across from the gym. The
children are going to love seeing their names on these tiles for years to
come! The "early bird special" of $45.00 for a 6x6 tile
ends June 1st. After that it will be $50.00. Please share this with
grandparents, employers, and other connections you may have that might be
interested. This is a 70% profit for us, and creates a lasting memory!
Questions, contact Valerie Quinn at 425 398-7239 or Polly Blanchard 425 820-8909. The grand winners for the box top
contest, accumulative for the entire year, are Mrs. Amundsen/Mrs. Lindstrom’s
class for grades K-2 and Mrs. Guthrie’s class for grades 3-6! Congratulations
to everyone! Keep
collecting the box tops and save them at home over the summer. When students
begin their 2005-2006 school year, there will be a box top contest in the
early fall and it will be time to turn in those box tops! WANTED**WANTED**WANTED**WANTED
