These students have been taking the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, commonly referred to as the WASL. I am very proud of the great effort students are making to do their very best. Today, in “kid mail” for grades 3, 4, 5 and 6, is a flyer titled “Aiming High”. This publication is printed by OSPI and has information about WASL exams, including example questions from the various grade levels. Unfortunately, we only received enough flyers for the grade levels mentioned above. We do have a few extra that will be kept in the office for any families in kindergarten, 1st, or 2nd grades that would like to see this information. Please take a moment to read “Aiming High” as it gives valuable information about the WASL. Individual student results typically are sent to schools in early September. When we receive this year’s results, we will mail them to you. Teachers will receive copies of class results as well. NURSES CORNER 5th Grade parents, a reminder that your child needs a second MMR to enter 6th grade. As soon as your child receives this immunization, please call Sally or Geri, 425 823-4350, and give them the date so it can be added to your child’s records. The district mandates that your child not be placed on a class list until we have a date showing he/she is in compliance with state required immunizations. |

Check out our
website for the latest information! Next to the proposed additional playground area
will be a 200 sq. ft. concrete pad with three new benches and places for
engraved tiles. A 6"x 6" tile is $45.00 and a 12"x12"
tile is $250 dollars. We are building a "paper" version of
the tiles on the wall across from the gym to highlight contributors so far.
If you purchase before June 1st you get the "early bird" price.
After June 1st the 6"x 6" tiles will go up $5.00 each,
the other prices will stay the same. Please look for additional brochures
explaining this to come home, or contact Polly Blanchard at 820-8909. PLAYGROUND UPDATE We have applied for a $15,000 grant
from King County and will know November 2005 if we are approved. One of the
main ways we are fundraising for the additional playground equipment is with
the profits from the tiling fundraiser. We profit about 70% from every
purchase. There are 400 tiles available and we are off to a good start with
19 sold already. Even with out the grant, if we sell all these tiles, and
with other smaller fundraising, we will plan on the completion of the
playground Spring 2006. Please share this idea with relatives and businesses
you network with and encourage them to participate. Consider purchasing two
tiles for the price of one by using a matching grant (ex. Microsoft, etc.),
if offered by your employer. BOOK ADVENTURE PRIZE
GIVE-AWAYS Our Book Adventure program is off to a great start! We have already had two prize giveaways and have been impressed with the number of students who have read enough books to earn gold coins. Due to Spring Break and other circumstances, this month’s prize give-away was postponed until Friday, April 29. Students have one more week to read books and take quizzes on line at bookadventure.com and/or fill out the book forms. Keep up the great work!! If you have any questions about the program, please contact John Turnbull or Karen Ulbrickson through the Thoreau office, 425 823-4350. If your child is in chess club please look for your invitation to our end of the year reception and awards banquet! This club has been a huge success and we would like to celebrate on the last day of chess club Tuesday, April 26, in the Thoreau Commons. Chess will go until 4pm and then from 4-5pm we will have pizza and chess cake and honor our instructor Mrs.Van Cleave and coordinator Regina Bock. Each Chess Club participate will receive a medal and certificate for their efforts this year! Siblings are welcome! Questions? Please contact Polly Blanchard at 425 820-8909. TACO TIME Brenda has sold about 243 coupon books
and has about 57 more to sell. Yeah Brenda!!! This is a 100% fundraiser
for our PTA...we get to keep all the money and the coupons cost us
nothing. The coupon book is $1.00 and has a value of $5 in
coupons. This money will go into our playground fund. Please send
a note marked "attention Brenda Nunn", or call her at 821-5054 if
you wish to purchase coupon books. Mark you calendars for Friday, May 20, 6:00pm-9:00pm! Come one, come all to a family night of fun at Thoreau’s third annual spring carnival! There will be lots of games to play and chances to win tickets for the prize room. Dunk Mr. Roetcisoender and Mr. Turnbull in the dunk tank! Run through the 42-foot obstacle course and slide down the 29-foot “Wave of Fire” slide! Bring your hungry tummy – eat a combo meal for about $3.25 a person. Pizza, hotdogs, chips, drinks, popcorn, and churros will be for sale. Check out the students’ art on display. Have your picture taken. Volunteers are still needed. Please contact Stacy McJunkin, 425 823-5642 or email stacymcj@comcast.net. |
