PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Spring Conferences

March 30 and 31 will be the two half days in our calendar for spring conferences. Teachers have begun to schedule conferences with parents. The shortened conference schedule allows for teachers to meet with the parents of students they feel would benefit from a teacher/parent conference. If you don’t hear from your child’s teacher, this is okay. If you do hear from your child’s teacher, this is okay as well.

If your child’s teacher does not schedule a conference with you, but you would like to meet, please contact your child’s teacher.

S.H.A.R.E. WORKSHOPS

Sexuality Health and Relationships Education (S.H.A.R.E.) parent and student workshops for 5th and 6th grades are scheduled 7:00pm-8:00pm, at the following locations within our district:

March 31, 2005   Sandburg Gym

April 21, 2005     Mann Commons

May 12, 2005      Twain Library

June 9, 2005        Smith Library

This is a fun, educational, and interactive meeting that encourages students to form healthy relationships at an early age, and to avoid early dating relationships that lead to premature sexual activity. The focus is on parent education, providing parents with communication tools to work with their own child about this sometimes difficult to talk about subject. You and your student are welcome to attend any of these meetings sponsored by LWSD and S.H.A.R.E. Please contact your school for more information.

LOST AND FOUND ITEMS

There are piles of lost and found coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, a shoe, etc. in Thoreau’s Lost and Found area located across from the elevator on the first floor. Tonight the Lost and Found items will be moved into the Commons during Bingo. Please take a few minutes to look through all the items and see if any may belong to your child. All unclaimed items will be donated to a charity on March 31.

Did you know, this year over 2100 Eastside children received new clothing, dental kits, coats and shoes from Operation School BellŇ?

Please mark your calendar for

Pound the Pavement

A Family Funwalk to Benefit Operation School Bell®

On Sunday, May 15, 2005

Operation School Bell is a project of Assistance League® of the Eastside, an ALL-volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to Caring for Our Community. As you are well aware, the need in our community is growing, at a time when contributions are decreasing.  The number of children they are able to serve is limited only by the ability to raise funds. The 132 members of ALE provide new clothing with funds raised through an active grant writing committee, a direct mail campaign, individual contributions & fundraising events including “Celebrations” Holiday Home Tour, a Spring Event and  “Pound the Pavement”. Questions?  Contact Shannon Chavez, Chair 425-556-5106

BOXTOPS RESULTS

Race 4 results are in....Mrs. Sinclair's class collected the most boxtops for the K-2 grades and Mr. Elsworth's class collected the most boxtops for the 3-6 grades. Each student in the class received a small prize. Great job to all of our box top collectors! Collectively for Race 4 (six weeks), students collected 1,332 box tops. That translates to $132.00 for our school. Total to date for this year we have earned $1010.00!! We have reached our goal of $1000.00 for this program and we even still have one race left. Race 5 is starting now and will end May 5.  This race will be included in the overall classroom collection for the year and the winners from K-2 and 4-6 will receive a pizza party! Keep collecting - each box top is worth a dime!

CARTRIDGES FOR KIDS RECYCLE PROGRAM

Thank you for your support with bringing in old ink cartridges and cell phones. We received our third check for $14.00. We have received a total of $183.00 so far from this program. We are hoping to make at least $200.00 on this! Please keep bringing in old cell phones and used cartridges! They also take used laptops. Please place these items in the bins underneath the table located just outside Thoreau’s main office.

FOSTER FARMS

For those of you who participate in the Foster Education program we just received a check for $10.35. Every bit helps thank you! When you buy Foster Farm chicken products, the label has a donation amount and a code to enter online.  It is easy! Just go to www.FosteringEducation.com and enter the code from the label, then designate Thoreau as the donation recipient.

TACO TIME

We have sold about 78 coupon books and have about 222 more Taco Time coupon books to sell. This is a 100% fundraiser for us.... we get to keep all the money and the coupons cost us nothing as a PTA. The coupon book is only $1.00 and has a value of $5 in coupons. This money will go into our playground fund. Please send a note marked “Attention Brenda Nunn”, or look for the flyer to purchase these coupons. You may also call Brenda at 821-5054.

KUDOS

Thank you to Dianna Johnson for the idea of supporting the kids during WASL testing with snacks! She will be coordinating this for the 6th grades. And “Thank you” to Makayle Rich for working out a parent helper for the 3-5th grades. It is that time of year and the 3-6th grades received a letter regarding the schedule of this. You can confirm the specific times with your child's teacher. Or if you want to help with snacks and your child is in the 3-5th grade you can contact Makayle Rich at 820-5452.

DID YOU KNOW?

Thoreau Elementary has been highlighted in the Kirkland Courier just about every month this year! Unfortunately we all live outside city limits and do not automatically receive this paper. It is a relevant paper to our area, with many good articles that pertain to us and the schools in our district. If you would like to subscribe to it you can call circulation, Jim Christianson at 206-461-1337. A one-year subscription is only $12.00.

OUR STUDENTS DO BENEFIT! - THANK YOU!

Field trips vary greatly depending on grade level and teachers. Many of our students have already gone on a classroom field trip or will be going soon!  This is a privilege that the district does not fund! Thanks to our PTA efforts and your contributions we guarantee at least one field trip for each grade. Mostly we pay for the bus, which is usually about $250.00 per trip.  This is a significant part of our budget and can add up to $4,000.00 for the year. Thank you for continuing to enrich the student life at Thoreau!

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK IS APRIL 4-8 ! !

Mark your calendars for this special week where we give thanks to Thoreau's wonderful staff.
