Science Curriculum
News
On Friday, Thoreau staff members will be
attending a workshop all day, which will train them to use our new district
science curriculum. The science curriculum is an updated version from the
FOSS science kits already in use. Our fifth graders have already enjoyed one
of the kits entitled “Motion and Design”. The kits assigned to each grade
level are aligned with district and state content objectives and all stress
the teaching of the scientific process. Our staff is eager to start using the
hands on material that the kits provide.
Our science work team, led by Ms. Hartford,
has already provided in-service to our staff on previous PDD days, as well as
purchased supplies to support the kits when they arrive.
Health News
Recently,
on KING 5 news, Jean Emerson reported on a study that shows children exposed
to second hand smoke have decreased cognitive abilities. The study, published
by The Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives, showed that even limited
exposure to second hand smoke led to decreased test scores in reading, math
and problem solving skills.

VISION,
HEARING, SCOLIOSIS SCREENING
February 3, Thoreau
students, grades K-6, will be screened for vision and hearing. If your
student wears glasses for any purpose, please remind them to bring their
glasses to school February 3. Only 5th students will be additionally screened
for Scoliosis. The screening involves the district nurses checking your
student’s spine. Because the nurse will ask the child to lift up the back of
his/her shirt, it is recommended that 5th grade girls wear a bra
or swimsuit top for modesty.
COATS AND COLD WEATHER
CLOTHING NEED TO BE WORN DAILY
Due to the cold weather we
are expecting every child needs to wear a coat to school and out to recess.
Preferably, a coat, hat, and gloves would be the best, but a coat is a
definite necessity. Please label your child’s outerwear.

communication tools to work with their own child about this sometimes
difficult to talk about subject. You and your student are welcome to attend
any of these meetings sponsored by LWSD and S.H.A.R.E. Please contact your
