PRINCIPAL’S
PERSPECTIVE
Congratulations
Choir
Coin Drive a Success!
I am pleased to announce Thoreau students
raised $1,127.00 in one week to
donate to the American Red Cross. The funds donated will be used to help
families in the countries impacted by the devastating tsunami. It was very
touching to see so many children donating their pennies, nickels, dimes, and
quarters with very generous hearts.
GLOBAL READING
CHALLENGE
The
King County Library’s Global Reading Challenge returns to Thoreau! We are
excited to announce that this year we will have 6 teams of 4th and
5th graders participating in the KCLS Global Reading Challenge.
The Challenge is based on the Battle of the Books quiz program. This year the
students will compete against each other by answering questions based on
specific and factual information found in the contents of 10 books selected
by KCLS librarians. The winner of our School Challenge will go on to
represent Thoreau at our School District Challenge in March and then possibly
on to Regional Semi-Finals and the Grand Challenge.
Our school challenge will take place in the Commons
at 2:10pm on Wednesday, February 9th. All fourth and fifth grade classes, as well as

student in the top class from K-2 and 3-6. Each race is a new race, but in

January 27, 7:00pm on your calendars! "Runaway Snowman" is a
musical performed by our Thoreau 3rd graders and choreographed by our
fabulous music teacher Mrs. Paige. All Thoreau families are welcome. Adult
supervision is required.
KUDOS
Thank
you to Kathy Strasbourg for her commitment to our school and taking time to
apply for a number of grants this year. We have received one of those,
and really appreciate her effort! And a huge “Thank you” for all the donations for the Tsunami relief coin
drive. Thoreau donated a total of $1127 for the Red Cross! Thank you to Helen Garcia for collecting the
monies and taking all the coins in to be counted and donated!
REFLECTIONS UPDATE!
At the District level Reflections open house it was very moving
and impressive to see Thoreau children mentioned several times on the
program....Payam K placed first in Music, and Kaley C placed first in
Literature. They will move on to state. Hannah J placed first in Film/Video
(only goes as high as district). Danika B placed 3rd and Alex M placed 4th,
both in Music. This is possible by the tremendous teacher support and parent
volunteers (especially Helen Garcia and Debby Schaeperkoetter) that make
this happen! If you know these children please let them know how well
they represented themselves and our school!
